ADVICE ON MT. HOOD HAZARDS
The hazards that could come with an eruption of Mt. Hood could kill several thousands of people if proper precautions and steps are not taken. If seismic activity suggests a strong probablity that an eruption will occur, people on the flanks of the mountain as well as people in the hazard zones below should be evacuated immediately.
Information on the hazards associated with Mt. Hood should be given to all tourists in the area and be provided at hotels. Residents of the cities below the mountain should be given information on what to do if an eruption occurs or there is a threat one will occur.
In the event of an eruption, medical aid and emergency response vehicles should depart immediately to aid those that have been affected by lahars, landslides and hot ash flows.
For people who live in the valleys below and have not evacuated, lahars pose the biggest threat to life. People should try to get to the highest ground possible to avoid being swept away by the current.
