As you can see, there are a lot of factors that go into protecting the lives of the residents in the lower Mississippi River Valley Basin.  Without the structures discussed in this website, and the other structures further up and down stream, New Orleans would be nothing but a water world.  For now, the Mississippi River is under control, but it takes the effort of many different people, organizations, and businesses to keep everything stable.  It is very important to continue the search for new technology so New Orleans can be an even safer place to live and visit.  It is important to remember the flood of 1927 though.  Even though the flood control plan back then was not what it is today, Human error can still occur.  The water was able to create cracks in the levees and kill hundreds of people.  If we stay on top of the technology and respect the water, I do think we will be able to control the Mississippi River for a long time and keep the lives of hundreds of thousands of people safe.
