In Wisconsin there are over 15,000 lakes and 32,000 miles of rivers and streams.  Basically all of Wisconsin’s lakes and river systems have mercury in them.  However, there are some bodies of water that contain more mercury than others.  Mercury contamination is widespread throughout the state.  Any person that eats fish from Wisconsin waters could be at risk.  Mercury contamination can result in health problems for some individuals while others are less at risk. In the Eau Claire there are many water bodies that pose a risk to people who consume fish on a regular basis.  There are ways that people can reduce the risk of mercury contamination if they chose to continue eating fish from mercury contaminated waters.  Lake Wissota is a lake that is very popular among Wisconsin fisherman.  However, mercury concentrations are at a level of concern and action needs to be taken to avoid potential health risks.
