Although the original construction of North and South Jetties resulted in rapid accretion of land, subsequent raising of the jetties have not had the same effect. Instead, loss of sand has resulted in an erosional trend since 1967.

Even with actions to fill eroding areas, Westhaven State Park is under serious threat. The Park will be inaccessible within a few years if erosion rates persist.

Filling the site of the 1993 breach has been relatively successful, but there is always the possibility that severe winter storms could trigger another breach.

A long-term plan has not yet been put into use to deal with erosion in the Westport area. Renourishing the beach with sand and fill is only a temporary solution that, as you can tell from Westport's timeline, will be repeated until a more permanent solution is implemented. This cycle is costly!
