Potential Hazards in Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea is located on the edge of a tectonic plate boundary and with that comes all the potential hazards associated with tectonic activity. The island is located on the 'Ring of Fire' that encirlces much of the Pacific Ocean. In the image below plate boundaries around Papua New Guinea are shown.

In this area the Solomon Sea Plate is subducting below the South Bismark plate which leads to active volcanism on the island. There are approximately 14 major active volcanoes on the island today.

Along with earthquakes and volcanoes there mudslides and tsunamis are also potential hazards in this area of the world.
