.: Analysis
Our fifth stop of the day was in the refrigerator room. Appropriately named, the refrigerator room is the coolest room of the Crystal cave tour. Because this room is somewhat remote, the temperature of the cave holds steady at 48 degrees year round. What is interesting about this is that the average annual temperature for this latitude is also 48 degrees. However, the temperature of the room is not the only interesting feature of the refrigerator room. There are also a number of speleothem formations, similar to many other formations, just outside of the refrigerator room. The refrigerator room was also an interesting stop because of the air pressure changes that can be felt. Although, air pressure changes can be felt in other parts of the cave, this room is well known for effects of pressure changes outside of the cave. Because the air in the atmosphere changes, the cave has to change as well, causing convection currents in the caves. The convection currents within the cave can often be felt as a breeze.
