About Crystal Cave Crystal cave was discovered in 1881 when two boys were supposedly chasing a squirrel and the squirrel went into a hole in the ground. Upon further investigation of the hole the boys found that they had stumbled onto more than just a squirrel hole. The boys later returned to the area to explore the hole and discovered what is now the main room on the second level. The third level of the cave was discovered in 1941, and during the same year work began in the cave to remove mud and rock debris from the cave passageways. Stairs and lights were installed in the 1000+ feet of passageways and in April of 1942 the cave opened to the public. The lowest point of Crystal Cave is approximately 70 feet below the surface. The temperature in the cave remains around 48 degrees Fahrenheit year round. Recent discoveries of new portions of the cave are still being discovered. The owners believe that there are still undiscovered caverns in the area.
