Basics of Working with Windows XP

When working in the General Access Labs, it is important for students to log on as themselves. If you sit down at a station and do not have to log on, it means that the previous user did not log off and the machine is still mapped to the previous student's H: drive. You will need to log the previous student off and then log on as yourself.

When you log on, you are connected to the SGS (Student Global Server); drives are mapped for access to your data, and your profile settings are reestablished. The following document covers the basics of working with Windows XP as well as some basic Windows XP operations.

Before you begin the connection process you want to make sure that the last person logged off. If you see the Welcome to Windows dialog box the last person logged off when they were done working. If you see the standard desktop or a program open, you must log off the previous user. To do this, refer to the instructions for Logging Off an XP Station and then continue with the appropriate section below to log in as yourself.

Connecting as Yourself

  1. Press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete]
    All three keys must be pressed together.

  2. In the User name text box, type your Windows username
    HINT: This is the same as your email username.

  3. In the Password text box, type your password
    EXAMPLE: uwec?1234
    NOTES:
    If this is your first time logging on to a UW-Eau Claire Windows computer, you will be forced to change your password.
    For information on passwords, including how to change your password, refer to Windows XP Passwords.

  4. Verify that the domain is UWEC
    If not, from the Log on to pull-down list, select UWEC

  5. Click OK

Programs are available through the Start menu and are arranged in folders based on the type of program, such as Microsoft Office or Graphics.

  1. From the Start menu, select All Programs » desired category
    A list of available programs appears.

  2. From the list of programs, select the appropriate program
    The selected program opens.

Closing programs before logging off helps protect your data and is strongly recommended. The following generic instructions will work with most Windows programs.

  1. If necessary, save your work
    For information on saving your work, refer to Saving Files.

  2. From the File menu, select Exit

Locking Your Workstation

If you are leaving your computer for a short time, LTS recommends that you lock your workstation. This helps prevent unauthorized access and modification to your data or files. Locking your workstation prevents anyone from using your station but your programs will remain running for quick access when you return to your computer.

NOTE: You are not able to lock General Access Lab computers.

  1. Press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete]

  2. Click LOCK COMPUTER
    The Computer Locked dialog box appears.

Unlocking Your Workstation

  1. Press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete]

  2. In the Password text box, type your password

  3. Click OK
    You are returned to the Windows XP desktop.

Remember to log off your workstation when you are finished using it.  Failure to log off can result in unauthorized access and modifications to your data and files.

  1. From the Start menu, select Log Off (your username)
    The Log Off Windows dialog box appears.

  2. Click LOG OFF
    The Welcome to Windows dialog box appears.

OR

  1. Save your work and close all programs that are currently open to prevent problems such as possible data loss 

  2. From the Start menu, select Shut Down
    The Shut Down Windows dialog box appears.

  3. From the What do you want the computer to do pull-down list, select Log off (your username)

  4. Click OK
    OR
    Press [ENTER]
    The Welcome to Windows dialog box appears.

Changing Your Password

  1. Return to the Desktop
    Close or minimize any programs that are running.

  2. Press [Ctrl]+[Alt]+[Delete]
    The Windows Security dialog box appears.

  3. Click CHANGE PASSWORD...
    The Change Password dialog box appears.

  4. In the Old Password dialog box, type your current password

  5. In the New Password dialog box, type your desired new password

  6. In the Confirm New Password dialog box, type your new password again

  7. Click OK
    Your password is now changed.
    NOTE: This is the password you will use when you log in.
