Working with the Microsoft VPN Client

Virtual Private Network (VPN) Client software restricts off-campus access to UW-Eau Claire network resources to UW-Eau Claire users while providing a secure, encrypted network connection. This document provides information on how to define a VPN connection and how to connect or disconnect from a VPN.

The location of the Network Connection utility will vary slightly depending on your computer set up.

  1. From the Start menuStart menu button, select Control Panel
    The Control Panel appears.

  2. Control Panel Home view: From the Network and Internet section, click VIEW NETWORK STATUS AND TASKS
    Control Panel Classic View view: Double click NETWORK AND SHARING CENTER
    The Network and Sharing Center appears.
    HINT: You can select the desired view in the Control Panel sidebar.Network and Sharing Center

  3. From the Network and Sharing Center sidebar, click SET UP A CONNECTION OR NETWORK

  4. Select Connect to a workplace

  5. Click NEXT
    The dialog box refreshes.

  6. Select Use my Internet connection (VPN)

  7. In the Internet address text box, type vpn.uwec.edu

  8. OPTIONAL: In the Destination name text box, type a name for the connection

  9. Click NEXT
    The dialog box refreshes.

  10. In the User name text box, type your username

  11. In the Password text box, type your password

  12. In the Domain (optional) text box, type UWEC
    NOTE:
    Although the text box suggests this step is optional, completing this step is critical to defining your VPN connection.

  13. Click CONNECT
    The dialog box refreshes as your machine connects to the VPN.

  14. In the Network and Sharing Center, click CLOSE

If you have disconnected from the VPN, you can re-connect from the Start menu.

  1. From the Start menuStart menu button, select Connect To
    The Connect to a network dialog box appears.

  2. Select the desired VPN connection
    HINT: If the connection does not appear, to help navigate to the desired connection, use the Show pull-down list.

  3. Click CONNECT
    The screen refreshes. After a few seconds, the Connect VPN Connection dialog box appears.Connect VPN Connection dialog box

  4. In the User name text box, type your username

  5. In the Password text box, type your password

  6. In the Domain text box, type UWEC

  7. Click CONNECT
    The Connect VPN Connection dialog box closes.
    You are connected to the network.

If you choose to, you can disconnect from the VPN when finished using its resources.

  1. From the Start menuStart menu button, select Connect To
    The Connect to a network dialog box appears.

  2. Select the desired VPN connection
    HINT: If the connection does not appear, to navigate to the desired connection, use the Show pull-down list.

  3. Click DISCONNECT
    Your machine disconnects from the network.

  4. Click CLOSE
    The Connect to a network dialog box closes.
