Working with Bullets and Numbering

PowerPoint allows you to apply bullets or numbering to any selected text. Bulleting and numbering is useful when creating lists or instructions.

Adding Bullets and Numbers: Toolbar Option

To use this option, you must use the Formatting toolbar. For more information, refer to The Formatting Toolbar.

  1. On the desired slide, select the text to which you want to add bullets or numbering

  2. For a bulleted list, on the Formatting toolbar, click BULLETSBullets button
    For a numbered list, on the Formatting toolbar, click NUMBERINGNumbering button

  3. To deactivate a bullet or numbering function,
    1. Select the appropriate text
    2. On the Formatting toolbar, click BULLETS or NUMBERING, respectively

Adding Bullets and Numbers: Keyboard Option

  1. For a bulleted list, type an asterisk ( * ) where the list will begin
    For a numbered list, type a letter or number (e.g., A, 1) and a period ( . ) where the list will begin

  2. Type one space followed by the first list item text

  3. Press [Enter]
    For bulleted lists, the asterisk will turn into a bullet, and the next line will begin with a bullet.
    For numbered lists, the next line will begin with the next letter or number (e.g., B, 2).

  1. If the ruler is not already displayed, from the View menu, select Ruler
    The ruler appears above the selected slide.

  2. Select the bulleted or numbered text to be modified

  3. At the top of the slide, adjust the left indent marginLeft Indent marginuntil the desired spacing is achieved

To change the format of bullets or numbers, you must first access the Bullets and Numbering dialog box.

Accessing the Bullets and Numbering Dialog Box

  1. Select the bulleted or numbered text containing the bullets or numbers to be modified
    OR
    Place the insertion point where you want a bulleted or numbered list to appear

  2. From the Format menu, select Bullets and Numbering...
    The Bullets and Numbering dialog box appears.

Modifying Bullets

  1. Access the Bullets and Numbering dialog box

  2. Select the Bulleted tab

  3. Select the desired bullet style

  4. To change the size of the bullets, in the Size text box, type the desired value

  5. To change the color of the bullets, from the Color pull-down list, select the desired color
    HINT: For more information about colors in PowerPoint, refer to Using the Colors Dialog Box.

  6. To select a picture bullet from the gallery,
    1. Click PICTURE...
      The Picture Bullet dialog box appears.
    2. Select the desired picture bullet
    3. Click OK

  7. To import your own picture bullet,
    1. Click PICTURE...
      The Picture Bullet dialog box appears.
    2. Click IMPORT...
      The Add Clips to Organizer dialog box appears.
    3. Locate and select the desired picture bullet
    4. Click ADD
    5. Click OK

  8. To select from different fonts and characters,

    1. Click CUSTOMIZE...
      The Symbol dialog box appears.
    2. Using the Font and Subset pull-down lists, locate and select the desired font and character
    3. Click OK

  9. Click OK
    The bullet format is modified.

Modifying Numbering

  1. Access the Bullets and Numbering dialog box

  2. Select the Numbered tab

  3. Select the desired numbering style

  4. To change the size of the numbering, in the Size text box, type the desired value

  5. To change the color of the numbering, from the Color pull-down list, select a color

  6. To change the beginning number for your list, in the Start at text box, type the desired number

  7. Click OK
    The numbering format is modified.
