Off Campus Access to Email: POP3 Server

You can download your campus email from the UW-Eau Claire POP3 server off campus using Outlook 2003. This document contains instructions on setting up Outlook 2003 to access a POP3 email server.

NOTE: If you are off campus and do not have access to Outlook 2003, you can use Outlook Webmail. This requires a recent version of either Netscape or Internet Explorer. To access Outlook Webmail, refer to Accessing Outlook Webmail.

  1. From the Start menu, select Control Panel » Mail
    NOTE: The location of this feature may vary depending on your computer setup.
    The Mail Setup dialog box appears.

  2. From the E-mail Accounts section, click E-MAIL ACCOUNTS...
    The E-mail Accounts wizard appears.

  3. Select Add a new e-mail account and click NEXT

  4. Select POP3 and click NEXT

  5. Under User Information, in the Your Name text box, type your name (e.g., Abel Doe)

  6. In the Email Address text box, type your email address (e.g., doeaa@uwec.edu)

  7. Under Server Information, in the Incoming mail server (POP3) text box, type mail.uwec.edu

  8. In the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) text box, type the server information
    NOTE: Outgoing server information will depend on who your Internet service provider is
    EXAMPLE: smtp.charter.net

  9. Under Logon Information, in the User Name text box, type your username

  10. In the Password text box, type your password

  11. If you want Outlook to remember your password when mail is checked, select Remember password

  12. Click MORE SETTINGS...
    The Internet E-mail Settings dialog box appears.

  13. Select the Advanced tab

  14. In the Incoming server (POP3) section, select This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)

  15. Verify that the port number has changed: 995 for POP or 993 for IMAP

  16. In the Delivery section, select Leave a copy of messages on the server
    WARNING: This option must be selected if you wish to access your messages from other computers (e.g., on campus). If this option is not selected, all email will be removed from the server and placed on your computer's hard drive. You will not be able to access any previous email using any other computer, including with Outlook Webmail.

  17. Click OK

  18. Click NEXT

  19. Click FINISH
    Outlook is now configured to download your campus email.
