Java & Cookies

Some sites, such as the WebCT and Desire2Learn, require Java and Cookies to be enabled. If you are having problems with either of these web-based learning system tools, checking your settings is one of the first things you should do.

Cookies are invisible text messages that help websites keep track of information for you. They can be retrieved later in order to identify you or, in the case of WebCT, to track whether you have logged in or not.

  1. Open Internet Explorer

  2. From the Tools  menu, select Internet Options...
    The Internet Options dialog box appears.

  3. Select the Privacy tab

  4. In the Settings section, click ADVANCED...
    The Advanced Privacy Settings dialog box appears.

  5. In the Cookies section, select Override automatic cookie handling
    Cookies Settings

  6. Under First-party Cookies, select the appropriate option

  7. Under Third-party Cookies, select the appropriate option

  8. To allow session cookies, select Always allow session cookies
    NOTE: Session cookies will be deleted once you close Internet Explorer.

  9. Click OK

  10. When finished, click OK

Java is an advanced programming environment that allows you to run additional software inside your web browser. For example, WebCT uses Java for chats. If you are having problems with this feature, checking your settings is one of the first things you should do. By default, Java is generally enabled, but you can easily verify it.

  1. Open Internet Explorer

  2. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options
    The Internet Options dialog box appears.

  3. Select the Security tab

  4. In the Security level for this zone section, click CUSTOM LEVEL...
    The Security Settings dialog box appears.

  5. Locate Microsoft VM: Java Permissions
    Java Settings

  6. Under Java Permissions, select the appropriate option

  7. Click OK
    Your changes have now been saved.

  8. Click OK

By default, Internet Explorer will block third-party cookies that do not have the right to see your web information without explicit consent. It is restricted so that your information can be read only in the first-party context.

  1. Open Internet Explorer

  2. From the Tools  menu, select Internet Options...  
    The Internet Options dialog box appears.

  3. Select the Security tab

  4. To return to the default settings, click DEFAULT LEVEL

  5. Click OK  
    The default settings are restored.
