return to topHow can I access the Internet?

On-campus computers have Internet access. For access from off campus, you will need an Internet browser (such as Netscape) installed on your computer and an Internet connection. For a list of service providers, refer to the LTS Help Desk list.

return to topWhat types of sites can I access using Netscape?

The largest portion of sites you are likely to visit are World Wide Web sites, but you are also able to access gopher, anonymous ftp, and telnet sites. For more information, refer to the Roadmap to Information Technology Resources.

The Internet offers information on many different topics. You are likely to see many educational sites, including a wealth of sites dedicated to computer and Internet information, more and more commercial sites, and some personal sites.

return to topHow can I search the Internet for information on a specific subject?

You can search the Internet using key words and phrases and a utility called a search engine. Several search engines exist, such as Alta Vista, Google, Lycos, and Yahoo!. Netscape offers access to some through the SEARCH ON THE INTERNET button, and the University offers links to many search engines from its Internet Search page. It is always a good idea to review the search tips for a search engine, as each one operates differently.

return to topHow can I remember a place on the Internet without recreating the process of getting there?

Netscape allows you to create bookmarks and save them so that you can return directly to the site without recreating your path. To set a bookmark: from the Bookmarks menu, select Add Bookmark. To access the same site again on a different occasion: from the Bookmarks menu, select the bookmark for the site you wish to access. For more information on bookmarks, refer to Bookmark Basics for Netscape 7.

return to topWhy does a link I accessed yesterday not work today?

Several things might be happening. It could be that more people are trying to access the site than there are connections available. It could also be that the server is down. In either case, you should receive a message that the server is not accepting any more connections. You should try again later. The problem could also be that the information you accessed yesterday has been moved to another site. In that case, you may have to repeat the search that led you there in the first place.

return to topCan I print from Netscape?

Yes, you can print pages from Netscape using the toolbar or the File menu. It is especially useful to do a Print Preview before you print from Netscape. Often, what you see on screen is only part of a multi-page document. Print Preview allows you to see exactly what will print before you send the document to the printer. For more information on printing in the labs, refer to the General Access Labs Policies and Tips.

return to topIf I use information from the Internet in a report I write, do I need to cite the source?

Yes! Several groups have established guidelines for citing electronic sources. Three of them are accessible through the University's Web Resource List under Citing Internet Resources.
