Bulleted Lists: Working with Picture Bullets

As a default, the bullet character in a bulleted (unordered) list is the bullet character from the font being used by the browser. FrontPage calls these bullets plain bullets. But you can also use pictures, GIF or JPEG files, for the bullet character in a list. FrontPage calls these bullets picture bullets.

No matter what you use when creating a web page, always make sure you have your audience in mind. When using picture bullets, users with visual disabilities may have a hard time interpreting the information if not created correctly.

When using picture bullets, you can use the bullet from a file or the theme. A theme is a collection of page elements, such as color schemes, fonts, bullets, and navigational bars, that are uniformly applied to all the pages in a FrontPage document, which is defined and maintained in the FrontPage Explorer program.

return to topMaking Picture Bullets Accessible for the Vision-Impaired

For people with visual disabilities, trying to understand picture bullets can be very difficult. A screen reader is necessary for visually impaired people to have information from the Web read to them. However, if picture bullets are not used correctly, the screen reader will misinterpret the bullet and confuse the user. Here is a way you can make your image bullets accessible to all users.

  1. Insert the word "bullet" or use an asterisk (*) as alternate text
For instruction on how to insert alternate text, refer to Working with Images: Assigning Alternate Text for Images
