Using the HTML Editor

Newsletters can be created in one of two formats: HTML or text. Both formats will allow you to enter the text content of your issue, but using an HTML format will also allow you to format your text, add backgrounds and colors, and add links and special features to your newsletter. Creating text newsletters can be useful if a large number of your readers are unable to view HTML messages, but the majority of readers will be able to access either format.

HTML Tools

In order to add extra formatting and special features to your newsletter, the HTML Editor provides you with a variety of tools. These tools are located within the Body section of the Create HTML Newsletter Issue page. (For more information on creating a new HTML issue, please refer to Creating Newsletter Issues: For Publishers.)

Source Source button Displays the source code for the HTML issue; clicking this button again returns to the design view
New Page New Page button Clears all information in the Body section
Preview Preview button Brings up a new window with a preview of your issue
Templates Templates button Brings up a new window with a list of possible templates that can be used to create your newsletter issue
Cut Cut button Cuts the selected text, image, or table
Copy Copy button Creates a copy of the selected text, image, or table
Paste Paste button Inserts the last item that was cut or copied
Paste as plain text Paste as Plain Text button Inserts the last text that was cut or copied without any formatting
Paste from Word Paste from Word Inserts the text that was cut or copied from Microsoft Word without any unnecessary formatting
Undo and Redo Undo and Redo buttons Undo reverses the last action done to the issue
Redo restores the last action that was undone
Find Find button Searches the text of your issue for a specified word or phrase
Replace Replace button Searches the text of your issue for a specified word or phrase, and allows you to replace instances with a new word or phrase
Select All Select All button Highlights all content of your issue
Remove Format Remove Format button Removes any text formatting options (e.g., bold, font choice, font color) applied to the selected text
NOTE: This option does not remove formatting options that are applied when you select a text style or HTML text format.
Bold, Italic, Underline, and Strike Through Bold, Italic, Underline, and Strike Through buttons Applies the specified formatting option to selected text
Subscript and Superscript Subscript and Superscript buttons Subscript causes the selected text to sink slightly below the baseline
Superscript causes the selected text to rise slightly above the baseline
Numbered or Bulleted List Numbered and Bulleted List buttons Creates ordered or unordered lists
Decrease and Increase Indent Increase and Decrease Indent buttons Decrease Indent causes the text to move slightly to the left
Increase Indent causes the text to move slightly to the right
Left, Center, Right, and Justified Alignment Left, Center, Right, and Justified Alignment buttons Applies the specified style of alignment to the selected text
Insert/Edit Link, Remove Link, and Insert/Edit Anchor Add Link, Remove Link, and Add Anchor buttons Insert/Edit Link allows you to make selected text into a hyperlink
Remove Link removes the hyperlink from selected text
Insert/Edit Anchor allows you to create a named anchor which can be linked to
Insert/Edit Image Insert/Edit Image button Allows you to insert an image into your issue, as well as change an image's size, alignment, or border width
Insert/Edit Table Insert/Edit Table Allows you to create and format tables within your issue
Insert Horizontal Line Insert Horizontal Line button Adds a horizontal line
Insert Special Character Insert Special Character button Accesses a list of special characters (e.g., €, ¡, ©) that can be added to your issue
Insert Page Break Insert Page Break Creates a page break within your issue
Universal Keyboard Universal Keyboard button Opens a window which can access characters from a variety of non-English alphabets
Text Style Text Style list Applies the specified text style (i.e., selects a preset combination of selected text formatting elements such as font, size, and color)
Text Format Format list Applies the specified HTML formatting style (e.g., Heading 1 or Paragraph formatting) to selected text
Text Font Font list Applies the specified typeface to the selected text
Text Size Text Size list Resizes the selected text
Text Color Text Color button Changes the color of the selected text
Background Color Background Color button Changes the color of the background behind the selected text
