Word contains useful settings for creating multiple choice quiz questions using the automatic formatting of lists. Rather than typing and pressing the [Tab] key for every line of your outline, Word can automatically do the outlining for you using the different levels and sublevels of bullets or numbered lists. Default settings are available, or you can customize your own. For more information on customizing an outline, refer to Customizing the Settings and Levels.
To create a question, you may use the default outlining settings provided in Word.
From the Format menu, select Bullets and Numbering...
The Bullets and Numbering dialog box appears.

Select the Outline Numbered tab
Select the option in the second column, first row
Click OK
Type the question
Press [Enter]
On the Formatting toolbar, click INCREASE INDENT![]()
Text is demoted to the next level of the outline.
Type an answer choice
Press [Enter]
Repeat steps 8 & 9 until all answer choices are entered

Click DECREASE INDENT![]()
Text is promoted to the next level of the outline. You are now ready to type your next question.
HINT: Pressing [Enter] again will complete the quiz.
Repeat steps 5-11 until all questions are completed
To end the quiz, press [Enter]
While forming your outline, special needs may arise. You may want to alter a numbered list to restart at the number one at a given point. You may also want to include a non-numbered/lettered line, called a soft return, beneath a numbered/lettered item.
Windows: Right click the line number to be restarted » select Restart Numbering
Macintosh: Press [control] + click the line number to be restarted » select Restart Numbering
To add a line of information without a number/letter, follow these directions:
Place your insertion point at the end of the line before your desired non-numbered line
Press [Shift] + [Enter]
Type the desired information
When finished, press [Enter]
The next numbered/lettered item appears and you are ready to type the next item.
