The department drive (W: \\cass1\deptdir) is similar to the student drive (H:). It is set up so each department on campus has space available to store folders/files for use by students. Instructors may ask students to submit homework or projects via the department's In folder. Some departments also provide a Work folder where students can save larger, in-progress class projects. Much like the H: drive, students are able to copy, paste, and save onto the department drive. For more information on SGS and its drives, refer to The SGS Drives. For information on creating a shortcut to the department drive, or any frequently-used drive, refer to Creating a Shortcut.
NOTE: The majority of these instructions refer to MY COMPUTER
on the Desktop. Instead of the text MY COMPUTER, you may see your username followed by the computer name.
There are some unique characteristics which you should consider while working on any department drive. Reviewing the following tips will assist you:
The In folder may be called a variety of different things (e.g., Incoming, Completed homework). The Work folder may also have varying names (e.g., Project area). Given the general similarities in meaning, you should be able to determine which folder is for which purpose. If ever in doubt, ask your instructor.
For documents contained in the In and Work folder, only the instructor and the author (i.e., student who submitted the information) can access the information. This means that other students cannot access information or assignments which they have not authored.
NOTE: Permission structure is at the discretion of the instructor and can vary.
You can copy and paste information into documents saved on the department drive as long as you are the author of those documents. For more information on copying and pasting, see Windows XP: Cut, Copy, and Paste.
There are several options for accessing Windows Explorer on campus computers, including the right click option and the Start menu option.
NOTE: The Start menu option may not always work, due to periodic Start menu reorganization.
On the Desktop, right click MY COMPUTER » select Explore
OR
On the Taskbar, right click START » select Explore
Windows Explorer opens.
From the Start menu, select All Programs » Accessories » Windows Explorer
Windows Explorer opens.
NOTE: The Start menu option may not always work, due to periodic Start menu reorganization.
Copying and pasting is a good way to transfer files/folders from one drive to the next. Copying and pasting a file/folder(s) works the same as saving. Once you paste a file/folder(s) onto the department drive, the file/folder(s) will be saved onto the department drive. In order to copy and paste successfully, it is recommended you work through Windows Explorer.
Open Windows Explorer
From the Folders area, click the file/folder you want to copy from
NOTES:
If the folder contains subfolders, it may be necessary to continue clicking through folders until you reach the desired one.
The contents of the file/folder you open will appear in the Name area.
From the Name area, select the file/folder(s) you want to copy
From the Edit menu, select Copy
OR
Press [Ctrl] + [C]
OR
Right click the selected file/folder(s) » select Copy
Once you have successfully copied a file/folder(s), you can paste it anywhere access is available. Pasting your file/folder(s) means that you will save that document into the appropriate file/folder. The instructions below will show you how to paste onto the department drive.
From the Folders area, click deptdir on 'cass1' (W:)
The contents of the department drive will appear in the Name area.
Continue to navigate through the departments, instructors, and courses until you reach the desired file/folder
From the Edit menu, select Paste
OR
Press [Ctrl] + [V]
OR
Right click the file/folder in which you want to paste the item(s) » select Paste
Your file/folder(s) will appear in the Name area.
The process of saving to the department drive is much like saving to any other drive (e.g., your H: drive). If you need general information about the department drive, refer to The SGS Drives. Use the following steps to navigate to the desired folder within the department drive and save there.
If necessary, open the file you wish to save to the department drive
