The Student Global Server (SGS) was purchased with funds from the Student Technology Fee and is for students. Each student has 50 MB of space that they can use to store files. This document covers the following:
Students will automatically connect (map) to their H: drive when they log on to a computer on campus. The server location will vary based on the student's username.
| If username begins with | The student maps to |
|---|---|
| A - K | \\SGS1\username$ |
| L - Z | \\SGS2\username$ |
The initial setup of the H: drive contains folders for documents, Eudora email files, and configuration information.
The drive for curricular specific software is mapped to J: (\\cass1\software$) and is organized by department (not all departments currently have folders but additional folders will be created upon request). Procedures for software installation requests vary by department. Check with the individual designated by your department for further information.
NOTE: When students are in the Housing labs, they must connect as themselves by mapping to the J: drive. Refer to Connecting to Network Drives for more details.
The department area is mapped to the W: drive (\\cass1\deptdir) and is designed for materials supporting curricular activities. It is organized by department/area with an official 4-character name.
NOTES:
The setup for the department area can be modified (and probably will) by each individual department. Regardless of the department setup, it is likely that there will be similar types of folders. Faculty are responsible for informing students about their unique setups.
When students are in the Housing labs, they must connect as themselves by mapping to the W: drive. Refer to Connecting to Network Drives for more details.
The folders setup for the W: Drive include:
W: Drive: IN Folder
Students can submit homework and projects to the IN folder. It is a write-only area for the students. When a file is copied to the directory, other students cannot view the contents. Only the author and the faculty member can access the contents of the files.
W: Drive: OUT Folder
Faculty members will copy data files and other files that the students require access to. Students can copy files from the area but cannot update the contents of the file when it is in the OUT folder, and they cannot copy files into the OUT folder.
W: Drive: WORK Folder
The WORK folder is designed to provide additional workspace for students working on large files for class projects. In the WORK folder, students can copy files into the area and modify files that they created. They cannot access other students files from this folder.
Students can access their Windows XP account and file space automatically from any Windows XP General Access or Housing computer lab. For more information about the computer labs on campus, refer to Student Computing Lab Support.
When working in the General Access or Housing computer labs, students will also have access to the J: drive for curricular specific software and W: drive for department space.
Most computers that provide access to the campus Windows XP server network will allow the students to log on and automatically connect to their H: drive. This includes most campus offices, dormitory labs, and General Access computer labs.

Now Macintosh users in the General Access computer labs have access to their network drives as well. For information on how to access to your network drive through a Macintosh, refer to Using Dave Access to Connect to the SGS.
UW-Eau Claire students who live in the dormitory or live off campus and own a Windows computer must perform an off-campus connection in order to access the network drives. For instructions on how to perform this procedure, refer to Connecting to the Intranet. Students will be required to manually map a network drive that they want to access.
While it is possible to access data on the server, it often is not an efficient environment due to the slow transfer speed if you are connecting over a dial up modem. Students may want to copy files to their hard-drive for working at home and then disconnect from the network. When they are done working on the files they should reconnect to the campus network and copy the files back to their H: drives. However, if they are connecting over cable or DSL, copying files to a hard drive may not be necessary due to a faster transfer speed.
Access to the network is provided for using data files. Software is not available to run over the network due to licensing restrictions, installation requirements, and increased traffic load on the network and server.
NOTE: Off-campus access is available for Macintosh users only with the purchase of DAVE software. For more information on DAVE, visit the Thursby Software company at http://www.thursby.com/.
