Setting Your Keyboard to the International Layout

Switching to the international keyboard layout allows you to use keyboard shortcuts when creating accented and international characters (e.g., è, ï). These instructions include establishing a keyboard shortcut that will toggle the layout on and off. After completing this process, learn how to insert international and miscellaneous characters in Keyboard Combinations for International Characters.

  1. From the Start menu, click CONTROL PANEL

  2. From the Pick a category section, click DATE, TIME, LANGUAGE AND REGIONAL OPTIONS

  3. From the or Pick a Control Panel icon, click REGIONAL AND LANGUAGE SETTINGS

  4. Select the Languages tab

  5. In the Text services and input languages section, click DETAILS...

  6. In the Installed services section, click ADD...
    The Add Input Language dialog box appears.

  7. Select Keyboard layout/IME

  8. From the Keyboard layout/IME pull-down list, select United States-International

  9. Click OK
    You are returned to the Text Services and Input Language dialog box.

  10. Click APPLY

  11. In the Preferences section, click KEY SETTINGS...
    The Advanced Key Settings dialog box appears.
    HINT: You must have clicked APPLY for the Advanced Key Settings to be available.

  12. From the Hot Keys for input languages scroll box, select Switch to English (United States) - United States-International

  13. Click CHANGE KEY SEQUENCE...
    The Change Key Sequence dialog box appears.

  14. Select Enable Key Sequence

  15. From the Key pull-down list, select a number
    EXAMPLE: Select 2
    This would create the key sequence [Left Alt] + [Shift] + [2] for switching to the international keyboard layout.

  16. Click OK
    You are returned to the Advanced Key Settings dialog box.

  17. Click OK
    You are returned to the Text Services and Input Languages dialog box.

  18. Click OK
    You are returned to the Regional and Language Options dialog box.

  19. Click OK
