The Student Global Server (SGS) drive provides students with ways to store files for academic use. With the shared drives, these drives make up the campus' common storage drives. This document will help you with the following:
The common storage drives include the H:, J:, W:, and S: drives. The following table will help you discern their differences.
| Drive | Description | Map Destination |
|---|---|---|
| H: | Students will automatically connect (map) to their H: drive when they log on to a computer on campus. Students are allotted 200 MB to store files. | \\SGS1\[username]$ |
| J: | The J: drive is for curricular-specific software, organized by department. Procedures for software installation requests vary by department. | \\cass1\software$ |
| W: | The department drive is mapped to the W: drive and is designed to facilitate file sharing between faculty and students in the same course. The drive is organized by department. | \\cass1\deptdir |
| S: | The departmental drives are designed to facilitate sharing files between department members. Access to the shared drives are provided by group membership. | \\fs3\[department]sh$ |
Campus computers automatically map users to their H: drive. All other drives must be mapped before they can be accessed. To map drives to your campus computer, refer to Connecting to Network Drives (Windows Vista | Macintosh OS X).
NOTE: For information on campus computer labs, refer to UW-Eau Claire Computer Labs.
The SGS drives are available to university users from their off-campus computers. Instructions vary depending on whether you are working with Macintosh or Windows machines.
Off-campus access begins by connecting to the UW-Eau Claire Intranet. After connecting, users must manually map the drive they want to access.
Off-campus access is available for Macintosh users only with the purchase of DAVE software. For more information on DAVE, visit the Thursby Software company at http://www.thursby.com/. For more information, refer to the UW-Eau Claire Help Desk.
