Connecting to Network Drives

In addition to saving documents to the H: drive, you have the option of saving work to a network drive. Department and specialty drives provide workspace for many users. Use of these drives is made available by the department and/or workgroup involved. In order to access network drives, you must connect to them.

There are several common shared network drives. The letters shown for the drives are recommended, but in most cases other letters will work.
NOTE: In student H: drives, user groups are divided according to the first letter of last names.

Student H: Drives \\sgs1\username$
Software (J) \\cass1\software$
DeptDir (W) \\cass1\deptdir
Faculty H: Drives \\fs1\username$
Department Drives (S) \\fs3\deptsh$
Specialty Drives (any) \\fs3\name or
\\fs3\name$
Web Drives (L) \\lucy\acctname$

In order to access a network drive, you must connect or map the drive.

  1. On the Desktop, click STARTStart button» select Computer [Name]
    HINT: The title of the Computer [Name] selection will vary depending on which computer you are using.
    Windows Explorer launches, displaying your computer's drives, devices, and networks.

  2. On the Command bar, click MAP NETWORK DRIVEMap Network Drive button
    The Map Network Drive dialog box appears.

  3. In the Drive pull-down list, select the desired drive

  4. In the Folder text box, type the address of the network drive
    EXAMPLE: Type \\lucy\smithzz$
    HINT: For a list of networks to connect to, refer to Shared Network Folders.

  5. OPTIONAL: To stay mapped to this drive the next time you login, select Reconnect at Logon

  6. Click FINISH
    The drive is mapped and ready to be accessed.
    The drive appears in Windows Explorer.

  1. On the Desktop, click STARTStart button» select [Computer Name]
    HINT: The title of the [Computer Name] selection will vary depending on which computer you are using.
    Windows Explorer launches, displaying your computer's drives, devices, and networks.

  2. In the Network Location section, right click the drive you want to disconnect from » select Disconnect
    The network is disconnected.
