TrueCrypt

Terminology

TrueCrypt allows you to create an encrypted data storage area known as a volume on your computer. You may see the following terms used within the TrueCrypt program. Understanding their meanings will help you to better understand the program.

Dismount
To close; close a connection to

Encrypt
To convert data to a format that unauthorized users cannot read

Hash
A fixed-length value or key that represents a string of characters

Mount
To access; open; establish a connection to; map

On-the-fly encryption
To encrypt/decrypt data as it is saved/read

Partition
Part of a whole; a logical division of a storage area, usually on a hard disk or USB drive.

Salt
A random string of data used to convert the characters of a string such as a password

Volume
A logical segregation of space set aside as a unit; a container for data (e.g., file, partition, USB drive, CD, hard drive).
