Working with Survey Questions

When creating surveys in Qualtrics, you will have two options for creating questions: you can choose to create questions from scratch, or you can copy them from the survey you are creating, a survey library, or another survey and then customize them to fit your needs. To add questions, you must create a survey first. In addition to the many types of questions that you can add to your survey, you have three options for how to add them: you can create them new, copy them from a source or copy them from within your current survey.

Creating Survey Questions: New Questions

When you create a questions this way, you will be creating a question from scratch.

  1. Click CREATE A NEW QUESTIONCreate a New Question button
    A new question appears.
    New multiple choice question

  2. Click within the Click to write the question text text box

  3. Type the text of the question

  4. If you are creating a question where you must supply answers (e.g., Multiple Choice), click within the Click to write Choice text box

  5. Type the appropriate answers for the question
    You have created a question for your survey.

Creating Survey Questions: Copied from a Source

When you create a question this way, you will be copying the question from a survey library or another survey and then customizing it to fit your needs.

  1. Click COPY QUESTIONS FROM...Copy Questions From... button
    The Libraries dialog box appears.

  2. Select where you would like to copy questions from
    EXAMPLE: Select My Surveys
    The dialog box will refresh to display the next set of options.
    HINT: To go back at any time, click BACK TO...

  3. Navigate to and locate the question you want to copy
    HINT: To preview a question in the Question Library, place your cursor over an option and it will appear in the Preview Pane.

  4. To select a question, click it
    NOTES:
    You may select more than one question to copy.
    A question is selected when the option turns blue.

  5. Click ADD # QUESTION(S)
    The question(s) is/are added to your survey.

  6. Make any desired changes to the copy

Creating Survey Questions: Copied from within the Same Survey

Sometimes you may have a question planned in your survey that is very similar to one that came before. In this case, rather than retyping it or creating a Loop and Merge code, you may simply wish to copy the previous question and then only make the changes necessary.

  1. Select the question within your survey that you want to copy
    NOTE: The question is selected when it turns light blue.

  2. From the Question Options pane, click COPY QUESTIONCopy Question button
    The copied question appears below the original.

  3. Make any desired changes to the copy

Sometimes after adding a question, you may need to edit it.

  1. Select the question to be edited
    NOTE: When the question is selected, it will turn light blue and all the options will be displayed.

  2. Make the appropriate changes

After laying out the first draft of your survey, you may realize that a certain question could be more effective if placed earlier or later than it was. In this case, the question does not need to be deleted or retyped; it can be moved to the new location.

  1. Select the question you want to move
    The question is selected when it turns blue.

  2. Click the arrow representing the direction to move the question
    The question will move one space, either up or down.

  3. Repeat step 2 until the question is where you want it
    The question will stay where it is.
    NOTE: You can move between Question Blocks and page breaks in this manner.
    EXAMPLE: If a question is at the very end of a Question Block, when you click DOWN, the question will move into the next Question Block.

Questions can be deleted if they are no longer relevant to the survey.

  1. Select the question to be deleted
    NOTE: When the question is selected, it will turn light blue and all the options will be displayed.

  2. Click REMOVE QUESTIONRemove Question button
    NOTES:
    The question is removed from the body of your survey.
    The question is placed in the Trash/Unused Questions section at the bottom of the survey.

Restoring a Deleted Question

If you decide that you would like to use a question that you previously deleted, you can restore it from the Trash.

WARNING: This can be done only as long as you have not emptied the Trash.

  1. At the bottom of the survey, from the Trash/Unused Questions section, for the desired question, click RESTORE
    The question is restored to its original position in the survey.

  2. Move the question as needed

Emptying the Trash

When your survey is complete and ready for distribution, you may want to empty the Trash of unused and deleted questions that accumulated during the survey creation process.

  1. From the Trash/Unused Questions section at the bottom of the survey, click EMPTY TRASH
    A confirmation dialog box appears.

  2. Click OK
    The Trash is emptied.
