Using Question Response Loop and Merge

Loop and Merge allows you to ask the same set of questions about multiple things. Efficiency and consistency is realized because you create the set of questions only once. The question set that will be looped must be contained in a separate question block.

Question Response Loop and Merge uses respondents’ selections in a previous question as the basis for the loop. Smart Text must also be used to pipe the choice into the text of each question.

NOTES:
The question set that will be looped must be contained in a question block separate from the block containing the question whose responses will be used for the loops.

To use Question Response Loop and Merge:

1. Create the question block that will contain the questions to be looped

2. Create the questions within the block

3. From the Block Options pull-down menu, select Loop and Merge…
   The Block Options dialog box appears.

4. Select Use Question Response Loop and Merge with this question block
   

5. In the Please select a question to loop from section, from the first pull-down menu, select the question
   HINT: This is the question containing the choices you will be asking the additional questions about.
   EXAMPLE: Select Which of the following UW campuses have you visited?
   

6. From the second pull-down menu, select the desired option
   EXAMPLE: Select Selected Choices

7. In the Loop Randomization section, select the desired option
   

8. Click SAVE

9. For each question in the block, to pipe in the Smart Text variables,
   1. Click within the text of the question
   2. Click RICH TEXT EDITOR
      The Rich Text Editor dialog box appears.
   3. Place cursor where you want the piped text inserted
   4. Click PIPE SMART TEXT
      The Piped Text dialog box appears.
      
   5. From the Pipe text from a pull-down menu, select Loop and Merge Field
   6. From the Loop and Merge Field pull-down menu, select the field number
   7. Click INSERT PIPED TEXT
      Code appears in the Edit Survey view. Respondents will see the question with the piped text.
