Adding visual components to your slide(s) can enhance or underscore your message. Images from clip art collections, the Internet, or scanned images can be added to your PowerPoint slides. You can also add visual components by using PowerPoint's drawing tools, see Drawing in Office XP. This document tells you how to add and manage images in your slides:
PowerPoint is equipped with a Clip Gallery that has numerous images in several different categories. It is easy to enhance your slides with appropriate clip art from the gallery. You can also import clip art images from your files or the Web to add to your Clip Gallery.
Move to the appropriate slide
From the Insert menu, select Picture » Clip Art
The Clip Gallery : PowerPoint dialog box appears.
HINT: To add images from your files or online to the Clip Gallery, click IMPORT... or ONLINE...
Use the Category and Search features to select the image you want to add to your slide
Click INSERT
The image is inserted in the slide and the Picture section of the Formatting Palette opens.
NOTES:
The Picture section of the Formatting Palette opens only when the image is selected.
The Formatting Palette should automatically appear on the right side of your screen when you open PowerPoint. If the Formatting Palette is not open, see Picture Options: Opening the Formatting Palette.
HINTS:
To format your image, see Picture Options: Picture Section of the Formatting Palette.
To adjust the location and size of your image, see Managing Images: Positioning or Managing Images: Resizing.
You can also add electronic images from other sources (e.g., scanned images or images saved from the Internet). To learn how to find and to save images from the Internet, see Capturing Images, Sounds, and Movies.
Move to the appropriate slide
From the Insert menu, select Picture » From File
The Choose A Picture dialog box appears.
Navigate to and select the image you want to add to your slide
Click INSERT
The image is inserted in the slide and the Picture section of the Formatting Palette opens.
NOTE:
The Formatting Palette opens only when the image is selected.
The Formatting Palette should automatically appear on the right side of your screen when you open PowerPoint. If the Formatting Palette is not open, see Picture Options: Opening the Formatting Palette.
HINTS:
To format your image, see Picture Options: Picture Section of the Formatting Palette.
To adjust the location and size of your image, see Managing Images: Positioning or Managing Images: Resizing.
Once you have inserted an image into your slide, you can easily position, resize, rotate, or add a border to it as needed.
Click and hold in the middle of the image
Your pointer changes to a closed hand.
Drag the image to the desired location
Release the mouse button
Select the image by clicking it once
Squares called sizing handles appear around the selected image.
Click and hold one of the sizing handles
HINTS:
To keep the image in the same proportions, use one of the corner handles.
To distort the image, use one of the side handles.
To resize the image, drag the handle until the image is the desired size
NOTE: You will see an outline of a box indicating the new size of the image. It resizes when you release the mouse button.
Release the mouse button
Select the image by clicking it once
From the Formatting Palette, in the Picture section, click FORMAT PICTURE...
The Format Picture dialog box appears.
HINT: If the Formatting Palette does not appear, see Picture Options: Opening the Formatting Palette.

From the Format Picture dialog box, select the Colors and Lines tab
In the Line section, from the Color pull-down list, select the desired color for the border of your image
From the Dashed pull-down list, select the desired style of dashing for your border
Use the Transparency slide bar to increase or decrease the transparency of your border
From the Style pull-down list, select the desired style of line for your border
In the Weight text box, type or use the nudge buttons to select the desired width of the border
When finished, click OK
NOTE: To add effects such as shadows to your image, see Adding 3-D or Shadows for PowerPoint XP.
Select the image by clicking it once
Once you have inserted a picture into your PowerPoint slide, there are options that can enhance its look. The Picture section of the Formatting Palette lets you change the look of your image by offering options such as line style, transparency settings, contrast shades, color choices, and cropping. When you select your image, the Picture section should automatically open. For more information on picture options, see Modifying Clip Art for Office XP.
The Formatting Palette should automatically appear on the right side of your screen when you open PowerPoint. If the palette is not visible, do the following:
From the View menu, select Formatting Palette
The Formatting Palette appears on the right side of the screen.
NOTE: The Formatting Palette is open when the menu option is checked. The Picture section opens when an image is selected.
The Picture section of the Formatting Palette gives you many different options for formatting your images.

| Crop/Cutout | Recaptures the image, allowing you to crop or to cut out unnecessary elements in the image. | |
| Selection Tools | Selects an area of the image for editing purposes. |
