Animating Diagrams

Animation refers to the movement/sound accompanying text or diagram shapes as they are introduced or exited from the presentation. Using animation with your diagrams can enhance your presentation and draw viewers' attention to important parts of the diagram or create a "building" effect.

Prior to adding animation, create and format your diagram. For more information, refer to Working with Diagrams or PowerPoint Diagrams: Overview. For more information on animation, see Using Animation.

  1. Open your presentation

  2. From the Slide Show menu, select Custom Animation...
    The Custom Animation task pane appears to the right of the slide.

  3. Select the text or diagram shape you want to animate

  4. In the Custom Animation task pane, click ADD EFFECT

  5. From the submenu, select Entrance, Emphasis, Exit, or Motion Paths to select the appropriate effect for the diagram
    NOTE: If the options listed aren't what you are looking for, select More Effects... or More Motion Paths... to pick from a larger selection.

  6. From the submenu, select the desired effect
    While choosing the effects, a list of your choices will be shown in the Custom Animation task pane.
    HINT: To preview the animation, click PLAY

  7. From the Start pull-down list, select the option corresponding to when you want the effect to occur

  8. Customize additional options pertaining to the effects as appropriate

  9. OPTIONAL: To eliminate the effect just applied, click REMOVE
