Configuring Off Campus Access to Email: for Use without VPN

A VPN connection is the extension of a private network and it allows users to securely access organization intranets. You must establish a VPN connection in order to complete the following instructions to configure your off campus email access. Once you have completed the configuration, however, you will not need to use the VPN connection to check your email using Outlook from off campus.

1. Establish a VPN connection with UW-Eau Claire
   NOTE: After you have completed the steps for this configuration, you will not need to use the VPN connection to check your email using Outlook.

2. From the Start menu, select Control Panel » Mail
   The Mail Setup-Outlook dialog box appears.

3. Click SHOW PROFILES...
   The Mail dialog box appears.

4. Click ADD...
   The New Profile dialog box appears.

5. In the Profile Name text box, type https://username
   NOTE: Use your UW-Eau Claire username.
   

6. Click OK
   The E-mail Accounts wizard appears.

7. Under E-mail, select Add a new e-mail account and click NEXT

8. Select Microsoft Exchange Server and click NEXT

9. In the Microsoft Exchange Server text box,
   if your username starts with letters A-K type cherrycoke.uwec.edu
   if your username starts with letters L-Z type cherrypepsi.uwec.edu

10. OPTIONAL: Select Use Cached Exchange Mode
    NOTES:
    A check appears in the check box when it is selected.
    While this step is optional, it is recommended.

11. In the User Name text box, type your username

12. Click MORE SETTINGS...
    The Microsoft Exchange Server dialog box appears.

13. Select the Connection tab

14. In the Exchange over the Internet section, select Connect to my Exchange mailbox using HTTP
    NOTE: A check appears in the check box when it is selected.
    

15. Click EXCHANGE PROXY SETTINGS...
    The Exchange Proxy Settings dialog box appears.

16. In the Connection settings section:
    1. In the Use this URL to connect to my proxy server for Exchange text box, type webmail.uwec.edu
    2. Select Connect using SSL only
    3. Select Mutually authenticate the session when connecting with SSL

    4. In the Principal name for proxy server text box, type msstd:webmail.uwec.edu
       NOTE: A check appears in the check box when it is selected.

17. In the Proxy authentication settings section from the Use this authentication when connecting to my proxy server for exchange pull-down menu, select Basic Authentication
    

18. Click OK
    The Microsoft Exchange Server dialog box closes.

19. Click NEXT

20. Click FINISH

21. In the Mail dialog box, select your new profile

22. Click OK
    NOTE: When Outlook starts up you will prompted to type a username and password. In the username text box type uwec/username and then your UW-Eau Claire password in the password text box.
