Working with Attachments

Outlook Webmail allows you to share files with your email correspondents through the use of attachments. This document discusses accessing email attachments, attaching files, and deleting attachments using Outlook Webmail.

Often you will receive messages that will have files attached for you to view through Word, Notepad, Excel, or other programs. You can choose to view the attachment prior to saving it, or you can save it and then work with it.

Accessing Email Attachments: Open as Web Page

  1. To open a message, click its subject
    The message appears in the main screen.

  2. For the attachment you want to view, click OPEN AS WEB PAGE
    The attachment opens in a viewing window.

  3. To save the attachment, in the You are currently viewing section, click the filename
    The attachment is saved to the desktop.
    The Downloads dialog box and an Untitled viewing window appear.

  4. To open the original file in the default application, in the Downloads dialog box, double click the file iconExample file icon
    The application opens, displaying the attachment.

Accessing Email Attachments: Linked Filename

Clicking the linked filename of an attachment will save it. You can then open it in its native application.

  1. To open a message, click its subject
    The message appears in the main screen.

  2. For the attachment you want to view, click the linked filename
    The attachment is saved to the desktop.
    The Downloads dialog box and an Untitled viewing window appear.

  3. To open the original file in the default application, in the Downloads dialog box, double click the file iconExample file icon
    The application opens, displaying the attachment.

It is often necessary to attach files from Word, Notepad, Excel, or other programs to messages you send to people.

  1. Compose a new mail message to send

  2. When finished typing the message content, click ATTACH FILEAttach File icon
    OR
    Click ATTACHMENTS...Attachments
    The Attachments screen appears.

  3. Click CHOOSE FILE
    A navigation dialog box appears.

  4. Navigate to and select the file

  5. Click CHOOSE
    The Attachments screen reappears.

  6. Click ATTACH
    The file is now listed under Attachments and will be sent when the message is sent.

  7. OPTIONAL: To attach additional files, repeat steps 3-6

  8. To return to the message, click DONEDone icon

  9. To send the message, click SENDSend icon
    The message and attachment(s) are sent together.

return to topDeleting Attachments

While composing a message, you may want to remove an attachment from its corresponding message. Attachments can be deleted only before their corresponding message is sent.

  1. Access the message from which you want to remove the attachment

  2. From the message toolbar, click ATTACH FILEAttach File icon
    OR
    Click ATTACHMENTS...Attachments
    The Attachments screen appears.

  3. Under Attachments, select the attachment(s) to be deleted
    NOTE: The file is selected if a checkmark appears before it.

  4. Click REMOVERemove icon
    The attachment(s) are now deleted from the message.

  5. To return to the message, click DONEDone icon
