Microsoft Outlook Webmail

for Internet Explorer

Customizing Webmail's Appearance

To let you determine its appearance and layout, Microsoft Outlook Webmail offers two color schemes and lets you choose how messages are displayed and read, and choose the language for the Webmail display. This document shows you how to customize Webmail to your specifications.

return to topChoosing a Color Scheme

There are two Webmail color schemes that you can choose between.

  1. On the Outlook Toolbar, click OPTIONSOptions icon
    The Options screen appears.

  2. From the Navigation pane, select General Settings
The screen refreshes to display the General Settings options.

  3. In the Appearance section, in the pull-down list, choose a color scheme
NOTE: The current scheme is at the top of the list.

  4. Click SAVESave icon
NOTE: To see the changes you need to refresh your browser.

return to topCustomizing the Layout

Webmail offers flexibility in how messages and Contacts are listed, and also in where the Reading Pane—which lets you see item contents without opening a new window—is positioned.

Customizing the Layout: Changing the Item View

You can view messages and Contacts on one or two lines. The one line view condenses an item's information, creating space to view more items at once. By using the two line view, however, more space is provided for individual items, allowing you to see more of an item's information without opening it.

NOTES:
A single button is used for both the SINGLE LINE and MULTIPLE LINES views; the button's appearance changes slightly when it is clicked.
The SINGLE LINE and MULTIPLE LINES button are available only in Mail and Contacts.

  1. From the Toolbar, click SINGLE LINESingle Line iconor MULTIPLE LINESMultiple Lines icon
Depending on the current view, listed items will change to either a single line or multiple line view.
HINT: In the MULTIPLE LINE view, when you rest your mouse over an email subject, a box appears displaying the full text of the subject. This can be useful for quickly browsing among messages with lengthy subjects.

Customizing the Layout: Positioning the Reading Pane

The reading pane allows you to view messages, Contacts, Tasks, and meetings or appointments without opening them. This option can save you time when browsing through multiple items.

  1. Select the folder for which you want to position the reading pane

  2. On the Toolbar, click SHOW/HIDE READING PANEShow/Hide Reading Pane icon» select the desired option

    Icon Name Description
Off icon Off Removes the reading pane
Right icon Right Positions the reading pane to the right side of the screen
Bottom icon Bottom Positions the reading pane to the bottom of the screen

  3. To adjust the size of the reading pane
    1. Place your cursor between the reading pane and the folder contents
Once in the correct position, the cursor becomes a double headed arrow.
    2. Click and hold the mouse button
    3. Drag the reading pane until it is the appropriate size
    4. Release the mouse button

return to topChoosing a Language for the Display

With Microsoft Outlook Webmail, you are able to choose the language in which to display Webmail. This customization affects everything except folder names and message content. Message content appears in the language it was originally sent in.

  1. On the Outlook Toolbar, click OPTIONSOptions icon
    The Options screen appears.

  2. From the Navigation pane, select Regional Settings
The screen refreshes to display the Regional Settings options.

  3. In the Language section, from the Choose language pull-down list, select the preferred language

  4. Click SAVESave icon
The display is now in the selected language.
