Dialup Instructions for Macintosh OS X

This document will explain how to configure Dialup Networking for Macintosh OS X. Any questions concerning this procedure should be directed to the LTS Help Desk (836-5711 or helpdesk@uwec.edu). The sections of this document should generally be accessed in the following order:

Before you can connect using dialup, you must unlock the System Preferences for your Network settings.

  1. From the Apple menu, select System Preferences...
    The System Preferences dialog box appears.

  2. From the Navigation toolbar, click NETWORK
    In the lower right corner of the dialog box, the lock iconLock iconappears.

  3. If a Click the lock to prevent further changes message appears next to the lock, continue on to Configuring TCP/IP
    If a Click the lock to make changes message appears next to the lock, click the lock icon and type your administrator username and password
    NOTE: An administrator username and password is set the first time you start your machine and run through the set up process. This username and password is necessary for any substantial system change or when system settings need to be unlocked in order to be changed.

Once you have successfully unlocked the System Preferences, you will need to configure Mac OS X for PPP. These instructions assume you already have the Network dialog box open.

  1. In the Network dialog box, from the Show pull-down list, select Internal Modem

  2. Select the TCP/IP tab

  3. From the Configure pull-down list, select Using PPP

  4. In the Search Domains text box, type uwec.edu

  1. Still in the Network dialog box, select the PPP tab

  2. In the Service Provider text box, type the name of your service provider

  3. In the Telephone Number text box, type the phone number indicated by your service provider

  4. In the Account Name text box, type your username

  5. In the Password text box, type your password

  6. OPTIONAL: Select Save password

  1. Still in the Network dialog box, select the Modem tab

  2. Select Show modem status in menu bar

  3. Click APPLY NOW

  4. From the File menu, select Quit
    TCP/IP and PPP are configured on your machine, the Modem menu is added to the menu bar, and you can connect to the UW-Eau Claire server.

In the upper right corner of the screen, you will see the new Modem menu. Within the menu bar, the Modem menu can be accessed by clicking the icon that looks like a telephone.

Connecting

  1. From the Modem menu, select Connect
    You are connected to the Internet.

Disconnecting

NOTE: Dialup quotas are in effect! It is important that you disconnect from your dial-up session when you are finished, so you do not exceed your quota and temporarily lose dial-up privileges. For more information about quota policies, refer to the Quota Information Page.

  1. From the Modem menu, select Disconnect
    You are disconnected from the Internet.
