Windows 95/98: Configuring a Charter Pipeline Cable Modem

for the UW-Eau Claire Network

These instructions walk you through configuring your Charter Pipeline cable modem to connect to the UWEC network.

System Requirements:

These instructions assume that you have a functioning network card installed in your computer and that the cable modem has acquired a signal from Charter Pipeline. A functioning signal from Charter Pipeline will be indicated by a solid green on the second indicator from the left on your modem.

Depending on how your computer was previously configured, you may be able to skip some of the following steps but please read each step carefully.

  1. Double click MY COMPUTER

  2. Double click CONTROL PANEL

  3. Double click NETWORK
    NOTE: If TCP/IP is already listed, proceed to the next step

  4. Click ADD
    The Network dialog box will appear.

  5. Double click PROTOCOL
    The Network Protocol dialog box will appear.

  6. From the list of manufacturers on the left, select Microsoft

  7. From the list of protocols on the right, double click TCP/IP

  1. If the Network window is not open, return to Step 1: Installing TCP/IP Protocol and complete steps 1-2.
    If Client for Microsoft Networks is already listed, proceed to step 3 below.

  2. Click ADD
    The select Network Component Type dialog box will appear.

  3. Double click CLIENT
    The Network Protocol dialog box will appear.

  4. From the list of manufacturers on the left, select Microsoft

  5. Double click CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS

  1. Select Client for Microsoft Networks

  2. Click PROPERTIES

  3. Select Log on to Windows NT domain

  4. In the Windows NT domain text box, type UWEC

  5. Click OK

  1. If the Network window is not open, return to Step 1: Installing TCP/IP Protocol  and complete steps 1-2

  2. Select the Identification tab

  3. In the Computer Name text box, type your username

  4. In the Workgroup text box, type UWEC

  5. Click OK

  6. When prompted, reboot the computer

return to topStep 5: Logging On

When the computer has rebooted you will see a screen like this:

  1. In the User name: text box, type your UWEC username

  2. In the Password: text box, type your UWEC Windows NT password
    NOTE: This is the same username and password combination that you would use if you were logging on to a Windows NT lab or office computer on campus.

  3. Leave the Domain text box set to UWEC

  4. Click OK

return to topStep 6: Mapping Network Drives

  1. On the desktop, right click MY COMPUTER

  2. From the Quick menu, select Map Network Drive

  3. In the Map Network Drive dialog box, from the Drive pull-down list, select the letter of the drive you are mapping

  4. In the Path text box, type: \\server\share$
    Example: \\sgs1\username$
    NOTE: You must know the exact name for both the server and the network share. If there is a dollar sign at the end of the share name, you must include it.
