return to topSomething is wrong with my modem; who do I call?

Who you call depends on only one thing; is it a problem with the modem or something else? A problem with the modem will be demonstrated by looking at the second LED from the left; if it is not a solid green, then you should call Charter Pipeline Technical Support at 1-888-550-9400. For all other concerns, except for hardware problems, call the LTS Help Desk at 836-5711.

return to topWhat server am I on?

If you are a student, the server that your share is on will be based on your username. If your username begins with a letter between A - M, your account is on SGS1. If your username begins with a letter between N - Z, your account is on SGS2.

If you are a faculty/staff member, the server that your shares are on will vary. The best way to find out is to look at the location of your network drives while logged into Windows NT on campus.

return to topI don't want to log on. What do I do?

If you do not want to log on to the computer when it starts up, click CANCEL or press the [Esc] key. If you choose not to log on, you will have access to the Internet, but not to your network drives.

return to topCan I automate the logon process?

The logon process can be automated at startup by installing the Power Toys utilities from Microsoft. This will place the username and password in the logon prompt automatically when the computer starts. Please be aware that Power Toys is not supported by Microsoft or the LTS Help Desk; if you choose to use Power Toys we cannot help you with it. Power Toys can be downloaded from Microsoft or can be installed from the Windows 98 CD-ROM.

return to topDo others have access to my computer?

Because your computer is now on the UWEC network, your computer may share resources on it; this means that you may share files over the network. If you would like to share files over the network, you may do so by configuring it in the Network setup in the Control Panel. If you choose to enable file sharing, the LTS Help Desk will be unable to help you configure it.

WARNING: By making your files available on the network, your files may be at risk. If you do not take appropriate security measures, such as using hidden shares and password protection, your files may be modified or deleted by others. It is your responsibility to protect your computer; the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire will not be held responsible for any damages that may result from the use of file sharing on your computer.

NOTES:
Your computer is only as secure as you make it.
