Below are the basics of opening and closing Netscape.

Opening Netscape

To open Netscape in a General Access lab:

NOTE: Instructions in your office may vary but will be similar to the following:

  1. From the Start menu, select All Programs » Internet & E-Mail » Navigator

Exiting Netscape

  1. From the File menu, select Exit

    Click CLOSEclose icon

Using Links to Access a Site

A link is a word or a graphic that will take you to another page when clicked. Links often appear in underlined and/or colored text. When the pointer moves over a link, it will turn into a hand icon. Clicking the link will take you to the indicated web page.

Navigating to an Unvisited Site

If you know the address (URL) for the page you want to access, you can go directly to the page using the menus or the Address bar.

Using the Address Bar

The Address bar is at the top of the window and displays the current address or URL.

  1. If the Address bar is not displayed, from the View menu, select Show/Hide » Navigation Toolbar
    The Navigation toolbar with the Address bar appears.

  2. Click within the Address bar
    The current URL is selected.

  3. Type the URL of the page you wish to visit
    NOTE: The Address bar can also be used as a search bar for the Netscape search engine.

  4. Press [Enter]

Using the Menus

  1. From the File menu, select Open Web Location...
    The Open Web Location dialog box appears.

  2. In the Open in pull-down list, select the desired option

  3. In the text box, type the URL

  4. Click OPEN

Navigating to a Previously Visited Site

Using the BACK and FORWARD Buttons

The BACK and FORWARD buttons maintain a list of URLs that have been visited in the current Netscape session. Once you exit Netscape, the URLs are lost.

  1. On the Navigation toolbar, click BACKBack Button or FORWARDForward Button
    OR
    1. Click the small down arrow to the right of BACK or FORWARD
      A list of the visited sites appears
    2. Select the site you wish to revisit

Using History

History keeps track of all the sites that you have visited in a customized time period.

To access past URLs using the Address bar:

NOTE: The Address bar only shows past URLs that you have typed in.

  1. From the Address bar, click the down arrow on the right
    A list of URLs that you have visited appears.

  2. Select the site you wish to revisit

To access past URLs using the Go menu:

  1. From the Go menu, select History
    The History dialog box appears with folders containing the sites you have visited that day.

  2. Navigate to the the site you wish to revisit

Sometimes Netscape may take a long time downloading information from a site and you may want to move on to something else. You can interrupt a document that is being loaded, and Netscape will show you everything that has been downloaded to that point.

  1. From the Navigation toolbar, click STOP LOADING THIS PAGEReload Current Page Button
