One of the most noticeable additions to Internet Explorer 7 is tabbed browsing, a simple and intuitive feature that uses tabs to let you view multiple web pages from one browser window. Tabbed browsing consists of a few basic tools that can enhance your browsing experience. This document shows you how to make the most of the Web using tabbed browsing.
NOTE: For a diagram with brief descriptions of tabs and the tab tools, refer to Internet Explorer 7: The Environment.
With Internet Explorer 7 you only need to open one browser window to view as many web pages as you want. This is possible because, with tabbed browsing, for each new page you can either create a tab for a blank page or open a linked page in a new tab. There is no limit to the number of tabs you can open in one browser window.
NOTE: By default, Internet Explorer opens with a single tab displaying your designated homepage.
While browsing the Internet, you may want to create a new tab to navigate to another website.
To the right of your current tabs, click NEW TAB![]()
OR
Press [Ctrl] + [T]
A new tab with a blank page opens in your current browser window.
NOTES:
The graphic on the New Tab button appears only when your mouse hovers over it.
You can have new tabs open with a homepage instead of a blank page by changing tab settings.
You may want to open a linked page in a new tab.
NOTE: Some web pages provide links that open in pop-up windows. By default, Internet Explorer opens pop-up links in a new window. However, you can change tab settings to have pop-up links open in a new tab instead.
Right click the desired link
A Quick Menu appears.
Select Open in New Tab
A tab displaying the linked page appears next to your current tab.
By default, your current tab remains active.
NOTE: You can have Internet Explorer automatically display tabs created from linked pages by changing tab settings.
Once you have several tabs open, the Quick Tabs and Tab List features make it easy to find the page you need. For a diagram with brief descriptions of these and other features, refer to Internet Explorer 7: The Environment.
NOTE: The Quick Tabs and Tab List buttons display only if you have multiple tabs open.
To left of your open tabs, click QUICK TABS![]()
Internet Explorer displays thumbnail images of all open tabs.
NOTE: Resizing the Internet Explorer window or clicking a tab from the Command Bar will close the Quick Tabs view.

To navigate to a page, click the image for that page
Internet Explorer navigates to the page and closes the Quick Tabs view.
To close a page, click the
for that page
NOTES:
The page is closed.
The thumbnail for that page is removed from the Quick Tabs view.
To exit the Quick Tabs view without navigating to a page, click QUICK TABS![]()
OR
Press [Esc]
Internet Explorer 7 lets you customize tab settings from the Internet Options dialog box. From here you can
