The Basics

This document covers the basics of using Internet Explorer for browsing the Web. Topics covered include:

When operating University campus computers, the UW-Eau Claire homepage will appear when you open Internet Explorer.

Opening Internet Explorer

  1. From the Start menu, select All Programs » Internet Explorer
    Internet Explorer 7 launches.

Exiting Internet Explorer

  1. Click CLOSEClose button

  2. If you have more than one tab open, a confirmation dialog box will appear
    1. To close all tabs, click CLOSE TABS
      To return to Internet Explorer, click CANCEL

Using Links to Access a Site

A link is a word or a graphic that, when clicked, will take you to another page. Links are often set off by underlining and/or by colored text.

Navigating to a New Site

If you know the web address for the page you want to access, you can go directly to the page using the Open dialog box or the Address bar.

Using the Open Dialog Box

  1. Press [Ctrl] + [O]
    The Open dialog box appears.

  2. In the Open text box, type the new URL

  3. Click OK
    The website appears in the browser window.
    NOTE: If the website does not appear, be sure that you have typed it correctly. If it still does not work, the page may not be available to be viewed, or your internet connection may not be working properly.

Using the Address Bar

The Address bar displays the current web page's URL (i.e., Web address) and can be edited to access other web pages.

  1. Click the Address bar
    The current URL will be highlighted.

  2. Type the new URL

  3. Press [Enter]
    The website appears in the browser window.
    NOTE: If the website does not appear, be sure that you have typed it correctly. If it still does not work, the page may not be available to be viewed, or your internet connection may not be working properly.

Using the BACK and FORWARD Buttons

The BACK and FORWARD buttons maintain a list of URLs that have been visited in the current Internet Explorer session. By clicking these buttons, you can easily move back and forward among these sites.

  1. To load the last web page viewed, click BACKBack button
    To load the web page viewed after the present page, click FORWARDForward button
    OR
    To go back or forward more than one site at a time
    1. Click theDown arrownext to FORWARD
      A list of the visited sites appears.
    2. Select the site you want to revisit
      The web page appears in the browser window.

Using the Quick History Feature

Quick History keeps track of the recent sites you have visited.

  1. Click theDown arrowbeside the Address text box
    A pull-down list of sites appears.

  2. From the list of sites, select the site you want to revisit
    The web page appears in the browser window.

return to topStopping a Page from Loading

Sometimes Internet Explorer will take a long time to download information from a website and you may want stop the page from loading.

  1. While a web page is loading, click STOPStop button
    OR
    Press [Esc]
    The page stops loading.

return to topRefreshing a Page

Refreshing a web page reloads the current page. This can be useful when a web page loads incorrectly or when you believe new information will display if revisited.

  1. Click REFRESHRefresh button
    OR
    Press [F5]
    The page refreshes.
