If they are properly formatted, files containing test and quiz questions (e.g., some "test banks" provided by textbook publishers or existing Word documents) can be imported directly into Desire2Learn, bypassing the need to copy and paste questions individually. Other files, however, must first be converted into a document format which D2L will recognize. This document describes correct formatting for various types of test and quiz questions, and provides tips for applying these formats.
NOTES:
Respondus is a program that can convert files for use in D2L.
Before questions from a test bank file can be converted with Respondus, you will need to place them in a document with the correct formatting. The document must be saved as an .rtf or .txt file type.
For more information on importing quiz content, contact
Roxi Muldoon in NET: muldoorr@uwec.edu, 836-2700.
Each question consists of a number followed by a period or parentheses, a space, and then the text of the question.
Each answer consists of a letter followed by a period or parentheses, a space, and then the text of the answer.
The correct answer is indicated by an asterisk before the letter (no space)
Following each question and answer, press return once so that the question and answers are each on their own lines.
EXAMPLE:
9. For an exchange to take place:
*a. there must be at least two parties
b. money must be present
c. each party must feel obligated to accept the offer
d. at least one person must have something of value
e. communication must not occur
If you will be copying questions from a test bank and pasting them into Word 2007, use Paste Special when pasting. The Paste Special option can remove most unwanted formatting from the questions and answers you have chosen to use from the test bank. With a Word 2007 document open:
From the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click PASTE
» select Paste Special...
OR
Press [Ctrl] + [Alt] + [V]
The Paste Special dialog box appears.
From the As scroll box, select Unformatted Text
Click OK
The text is pasted without formatting.
Questions or answers that are separated from their number or letter by tabs can be converted to spaces using Find and Replace:
To access the Find and Replace dialog box in Word 2007, press [Ctrl] + [H]
The Find and Replace dialog box appears.
In the Find what text box, type ^t
In the Replace with text box, press the space bar once
Click REPLACE ALL
All of the tabs on your question and answer list are replaced with spaces.
True/False questions are formatted almost exactly like multiple choice questions with just a few differences.
Each question consists of a number followed by a period or parentheses, a space, and then the text of the question.
The two answers consist of a letter followed by a period or parentheses, a space, and then the text of the answer.
If True is listed as the first answer, the question is imported as a True/False question. If False is listed as the first answer, the question is imported as a multiple choice question.
The correct answer is indicated by an asterisk before the letter (no space).
EXAMPLE:
1. Marketing is defined as producing, promoting, and selling products.
a. True
*b. False
Some test banks list only the correct answer for True/False questions. If this is the case, after you have copied all of the True/False questions you are going to use, type the answers in the format shown in the example above only once. Then, copy and paste the answers for each of the subsequent True/False questions.
NOTE: Be sure to mark correct answers with an asterisk before the letter (no space).
Short answer and essay questions must be preceded by a code to indicate what type of question they are.
On the line above each question, indicate the type of question with this code: Type: E
Each question consists of a number followed by a period or parentheses, a space, and then the text of the question.
EXAMPLE:
Type: E
12. What is the difference between planning, strategic planning, and marketing planning?
After you have copied and pasted the short answer or essay questions you are going to use, type the code Type: E above the first question. Then, copy and paste the code above each of the remaining questions.
Fill in the blank questions must be preceded by a code to indicate what type of question they are.
On the line above each question, indicate the type of question with this code: Type: F
Each question consists of a number followed by a period or parentheses, a space, and then the text of the question.
A list of correct answers at the end of the file allows for automatic grading. The number of the question is followed by a period or parentheses, a space, and then the correct answer. To give variations of the correct answer, provide the same question number multiple times.
EXAMPLE:
Question Format
Type: F
22.

Answer Format (list of answers appears at the end of the test file)
22. consumer behavior
22. buyer behavior
22. purchaser behavior
After you have copied and pasted the fill in the blank questions you are going to use, type the code Type: F above the first question. Then, copy and paste the code above each of the remaining questions.
