Creating Survey Questions

To help organize your survey's questions, you can create sections relating to each different survey topic. This document will help you create questions and understand what question styles are available to you.

Sections help you organize your survey. You can divide the questions within a survey by their type (e.g., True/false questions could have their own section while multiple choice questions reside in a different section). Or, you can divide sections by their contextual topic.

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click SURVEYS
    The Manage Surveys pane appears.

  2. From the Current Surveys section, click the name of the appropriate survey
    The Edit Survey pane appears.

  3. Select the Layout/Questions tab

  4. Click ADD/EDIT QUESTIONS
    The [Survey] Layout pane appears.

  5. From the Create New: pull-down menu, select Section
    Create New pull-down list

  6. Click GO
    The New Section pane appears.

  7. In the General section, in the Section Name text box, type a name for the section

  8. OPTIONAL: In the Message text box, type the desired section message
    HINT: To create the message using the HTML Editor, click HTML EDITORHTML Editor button

  9. In the Display Options section, select your preferred options
    An option is selected if a checkmark appears before it.

  10. Click SAVE
    The new section is saved.

After creating the sections, you can create several different types of questions for your survey including true/false, multiple choice, and short answer. For more information, refer to Quizzes & Surveys: Understanding Question Types.

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click SURVEYS
    The Manage Surveys pane appears.

  2. From the Current Surveys section, click the name of the appropriate survey
    The Edit Survey pane appears.

  3. Select the Layout/Questions tab

  4. Click ADD/EDIT QUESTIONS
    The [Survey] Layout pane appears.

  5. If your survey has sections, from the sections list, click the section in which you want the question to be created

  6. From the Create New: pull-down menu, select the type of question you want to create

  7. Click GO
    The New [Question type] Question pane appears

  8. FIll in the information as appropriate
    NOTE: Options will vary depending on the type of survey question.

Option Description
Title Including a title for your question is optional, but may help in organizing your questions in the Question Library. The title of the question appears in the Question Library rather than the entire question text.
Question Text This is the question you are asking your student. It can be written in plain text or HTML. 
Image Specifying an image to be displayed for your students is optional.
EXAMPLE: An instructor might want to display a chart to be analyzed before answering a question.
Question Feedback Creating question feedback (comments) is optional and can be written in either plain text or HTML.

You can create some of these options with the the HTML Editor.

  1. To preview the question, click PREVIEW
    To save the question, click SAVE
    To save the question and create another of the same type, click SAVE AND NEW
