Creating Quiz Questions

To help organize your questions, you can create sections relating to each quiz. This document will help you with the process of creating sections and questions.

Sections provide a way to organize your quiz questions; therefore, sections can be created based on the types of questions in the quiz. For example, the true/false questions could have their own section, while multiple choice questions make up a different section. A midterm or final exam could also have sections dividing the quiz into major units or chapters.

  1. From the My Home page, in the My Eau Claire Courses widget, select the desired course
    The Course Home pane appears.

  2. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click QUIZZES
    The Quizzes pane appears.

  3. In the Current Quizzes section, select the desired quiz
    The Edit Quiz pane appears.

  4. Select the Layout/Questions tab
    The quiz questions appear.
    NOTE: If you have not yet created quiz questions, the section will read, "This quiz is empty."

  5. Click ADD/EDIT QUESTIONS
    The Quiz Layout pane appears.

  6. From the Create New pull-down menu, select Section

  7. Click GO
    The New Section pane appears.

  8. In the General section, in the Section Name text box, type a name for the section

  9. OPTIONAL: In the Message scroll box, type the desired section message
    NOTE: This will appear under the section name during the quiz. You may also choose to have it appear next to each question in that section.
    HINT: To use HTML to type your message, click HTML EDITORHTML Edit button

  10. To specify how your section will appear, in the Display Options section, select the desired options
    NOTE: If you choose display message and image, you must select display section message and image once or repeat section message and image before each question.

  11. Click SAVE
    The new section is created and added to the Quiz Layout page.

After creating the quiz sections, you can create several different types of questions for your quiz.

  1. From the My Home page, in the My Eau Claire Courses widget, select the desired course
    The Course Home page appears.

  2. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click QUIZZES
    The Manage Quizzes pane appears.

  3. In the Current Quizzes section, select the desired quiz
    The Edit Quiz pane appears.

  4. Select the Layout/Questions tab

  5. Click ADD/EDIT QUESTIONS
    The Quiz Layout page appears.

  6. From the list, select the section that will contain the questions to be created
    NOTE: An item is selected if a checkmark appears before it.

  7. From the Create New pull-down menu, select the type of question you want to create

  8. Click GO
    The New Question pane appears.

  9. FIll in the information as appropriate
    NOTE: Options will vary depending on the type of quiz question.

    Option Description
    Title Including a title for your question is optional, but it may help in organizing your questions in the Question Library. The title of the question appears in the Question Library rather than the entire question text.
    Points This is the number of points the question is worth.
    Difficulty Assigning a difficulty can be helpful if you are weighting your questions. You can select difficulty settings of 1-5.
    Question Text This is the actual text of the question to be answered by the student. It can be written in plain text or HTML.
    Image Specifying an image to be displayed is optional.
    EXAMPLE: An instructor might want to display a chart to be analyzed before answering a question.
    Enumeration Indicates how the answers will be labeled.
    EXAMPLE: For a multiple choice question, you can choose to label each answer option (a,b,c,d).
    Style Indicates how the answers will appear (e.g., horizontal, vertical).
    Randomize options Selecting this option will randomize the answers; the answers will not be in the same order for each student.
    EXAMPLE: Answer a will not be the same for every student.
    Value Indicates the possible answers for that question.
    Weight Specifies how much that answer is worth. You may choose to make all answers except the right one 0, or you can choose to give partial credit for certain answers.
    Feedback This section allows you to explain why this answer is perhaps right or wrong. This will appear when the student reviews their answers.
    Hint You can choose to give hints for specific questions.
    NOTE: This is found by clicking EXPAND QUESTION HINT.
    Question Feedback Creating question feedback (comments) is optional and can be written in plain text or HTML. This will be seen when the student reviews their answers.
    NOTE: This is found by clicking EXPAND QUESTION FEEDBACK.


  10. To preview the question, click PREVIEW
    To save the question, click SAVE
    To save the question and create another, click SAVE AND NEW
    To save the question and create another of the same type, click SAVE AND COPY

  11. When finished creating your questions, click BACK TO QUIZ LAYOUT/QUESTIONS

  12. Click SAVE QUIZ
    The new quiz questions are created.

The Question Library serves as your own test bank of quiz/exam questions. Its features and flexibility make it a valuable tool when creating quizzes. For more information, refer to the Question Library: An Overview.

  1. From the My Home page, in the My Eau Claire Courses widget, select the desired course
    The Course Home page appears.

  2. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click QUIZZES
    The Manage Quizzes pane appears.

  3. In the Current Quizzes section, select the desired quiz
    The Edit Quiz pane appears.

  4. Select the Layout/Questions tab

  5. Click ADD/EDIT QUESTIONS

  6. Click IMPORT
    The Import Into [Quiz Name] pane appears.

  7. From the Source Collection pull-down menu, select Question Library

  8. From the Source Section pull-down menu, select the section containing the questions you want to import
    The screen refreshes showing the questions in that section.

  9. In the Source Collection section, select the questions you want to use
    HINTS:
    To select all questions in the section, select the section name.
    A question is selected if a checkmark appears before it.

  10. Click SAVE
    The questions are added to the quiz.

  11. Click BACK TO QUIZ LAYOUT / QUESTIONS
