Creating a Quiz

Using Desire2Learn to administer quizzes facilitates easy distribution and grading. You can create several types of quiz questions including long answer, fill in the blank, matching, and multiple choice. You can also customize quiz options to allow special access, permit multiple attempts, and create a report.

This document walks you through the Properties tab of the New Quiz dialog box. Other documents relating to quizzes can be found in the Quiz section of the Desire2Learn Table of Contents.

RECOMMENDATION: Set up the grade items in your gradebook first. This is especially important if you are using a weighted gradebook.

  1. From the My Home page, in the My Eau Claire Courses widget, click the course in which you would like to add a quiz
    The Course Home page appears.

  2. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click QUIZZES
    The Manage Quizzes pane appears.

  3. Click NEW QUIZNew Quiz icon

  4. On the Properties tab, in the General section, in the Name text box, type the desired quiz name

  5. To assign the quiz to an existing category, from the Category pull-down menu, select a desired existing category
    OR
    To create a category,
    1. Click ADD CATEGORY
      The Add New Category dialog box appears.
    2. In the Name text box, type the desired category name
      EXAMPLE: Unit 1 Quizzes
    3. Click SAVE
      NOTE: Categories are used to organize items.

  6. To link the quiz to an existing grade item, from the Grade Item pull-down menu, make the desired selection
    This extends the grading properties of an existing item to those of your quiz.
    OR

    To create a gradebook item,
    1. Click ADD GRADE ITEM
      The Add New Grade Item dialog box appears.
    2. Complete the dialog box as appropriate
    3. Click SAVE
      NOTES:
      If you are using a weighted gradebook, it is better to set up the grade items in your gradebook first.

  7. If you have linked the quiz to a grade item and want the quiz grade exported to the gradebook, select allow automatic export to grades
    NOTES:
    If this option is selected, allow attempt to be set as graded immediately upon completion must also be selected.
    Certain types of quiz questions, such as long answer, are not graded immediately.

  8. To allow students to view their grade immediately after the quiz is completed, select allow attempt to be set as graded immediately upon completion
    NOTE: Certain types of quiz questions, such as long answer, are not graded immediately.

  9. To select advanced options,
    1. If it is not visible, in the Optional Advanced Properties section, click EXPAND OPTIONAL ADVANCED PROPERTIES
      The Optional Advanced Properties are now visible.

    2. To display hints alongside the questions, select allow hints
    3. To have a message sent to you each time a student completes a quiz, in the Notification Email text box, type your email address
    4. To disable right clicking during the quiz, select Disable Right-Click
      NOTE: This option is used to disable printing during the quiz.
    5. To disable the sending of messages during the quiz, select Disable Pager Access

  10. To add a Description and an Introduction,
    1. In the Messages section, click EXPAND MESSAGES
      The message options are visible.

    2. To add a description of the quiz, next to Description, select on
    3. In the Description scroll box, type the desired quiz description
      NOTE: Descriptions are visible before the quiz is available.
    4. To add an introduction to the quiz, next to Introduction, select on
    5. In the Introduction scroll box, type the desired quiz introduction
      NOTE: Introductions are only visible when a student begins the quiz.

  11. To add a header and footer,
    1. In the Page Header/Footer section, click EXPAND PAGE HEADER/FOOTER
      The header/footer options are visible.

    2. To add a header, next to Page Header, select on
    3. In the Page Header scroll box, type the desired text
      NOTE: Page Headers are seen at the top of each quiz page.
    4. To add a footer, next to Page Footer, select on
    5. In the Page Footer scroll box, type the desired text
      NOTE: Page Footers are seen at the bottom of each quiz page.

  12. When the quiz is prepared, at the top of the page, click SAVE QUIZ

  13. To preview the created quiz, click PREVIEWPreview icon
