This document covers the last of the five steps you should complete when setting up your gradebook in D2L: Creating Grade Items. The selections recommended in this document are designed to help you easily complete the gradebook set up while giving you the most flexibility in maintaining your gradebook.
NOTE: Even if you copied your gradebook over from a previous semester, you must complete the steps outlined in the first three documents (Steps 1-3) of the Setting Up Your Gradebook series.

You can add grade items (i.e., assignments or other graded activities) and designate their name, point value, weight, type, and date.
From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click GRADES
The User List pane appears.
In the Grades Area widget, click MANAGE GRADES![]()
Click NEW ITEM![]()
The New Item pane appears.

Choose a grade item type
EXAMPLE: To choose the Numeric format, click NUMERIC.
In the Name text box, type a name for the grade item
OPTIONAL: In the Short Name text box, type an abbreviated name for the grade item
If you are using categories and the grade item is to be included in a category, from the Category pull-down menu, select the desired category
In the Description text box, type the description
Select the desired Grading options
If the grade item type is Numeric, in the Grading section, in the Max. Points text box, type the total number of points the grade item is worth

If you included extra credit points in this grade item, select Allow grade to exceed points
If the entire item is to be considered extra credit, select This is a bonus item
NOTE: For more information, refer to Working with Extra Credit Points or Working with Bonus Items.
OPTIONAL: Complete the remainder of the Edit Grade Item's Properties page
NOTE: In most cases, you do not need to enter any information below the Grading section. The additional options are as follows:
Select the Restrictions tab
Select the appropriate Visibility option
OPTIONAL: Attach the desired release condition(s)
Click SAVE
