Setting up Your Gradebook
Step 5: Creating Grade Items

This document covers the last of the five steps you should complete when setting up your gradebook in D2L: Creating Grade Items. The selections recommended in this document are designed to help you easily complete the gradebook set up while giving you the most flexibility in maintaining your gradebook.

NOTE: Even if you copied your gradebook over from a previous semester, you must complete the steps outlined in the first three documents (Steps 1-3) of the Setting Up Your Gradebook series.

To create a grade item:

You can add grade items (i.e., assignments or other graded activities) and designate their name, point value, weight, type, and date.

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click GRADES
    The User List pane appears.

  2. In the Grades Area widget, click MANAGE GRADESManage Grades button

  3. Click NEW ITEMNew Grade Item button
    The New Item pane appears.

  4. Choose a grade item type
    EXAMPLE: To choose the Numeric format, click NUMERIC.

  5. In the Name text box, type a name for the grade item

  6. OPTIONAL: In the Short Name text box, type an abbreviated name for the grade item

  7. If you are using categories and the grade item is to be included in a category, from the Category pull-down menu, select the desired category

  8. To create a description of the item,
    1. Click SHOW DESCRIPTION
    2. In the Description text box, type the description

  9. Select the desired Grading options

  10. If the grade item type is Numeric, in the Grading section, in the Max. Points text box, type the total number of points the grade item is worth
    New Item: Grade Options

  11. If you included extra credit points in this grade item, select Allow grade to exceed points

  12. If the entire item is to be considered extra credit, select This is a bonus item
    NOTE: For more information, refer to Working with Extra Credit Points or Working with Bonus Items.

  13. OPTIONAL: Complete the remainder of the Edit Grade Item's Properties page
    NOTE: In most cases, you do not need to enter any information below the Grading section. The additional options are as follows:

    Grade Scheme
    This section contains a pull-down menu that contains all of the default grading schemes as well as your custom ones. It allows you to select a specific grading scheme for this grade item.

    Display Options
    In this section you are able to choose to display the class average and/or grade distribution to students. This section also allows you to override the default display settings for the grade item. Once you have chosen to override the settings, you can toggle Grade scheme colors, Points grade, Grade scheme symbol and any custom display settings you have saved.

  14. Select the Restrictions tab

  15. Select the appropriate Visibility option

  16. OPTIONAL: Attach the desired release condition(s)

  17. Click SAVE
