There are a number of tools in Desire2Learn that the instructor and students can use to discuss topics and communicate with one another. The tools available are determined by the instructor; the instructor may also rename these tools if they wish. In this document, the tools are described with their default names.
Chat
Chats allow users to converse with more than one user at a time. They are synchronous (i.e., live, real time) discussions. This tool allows you to enter a new Chat or view previous sessions (archives) of the Chat. For more information, refer to Chat Options.
Discussions
This area provides the instructor with the ability to view, add, modify, or remove forums and discussion topics. Students can read and post messages; these messages are threaded (i.e., other students respond directly to comments from other students). For more information, refer to Setting Up Discussions.
Dropbox
This feature gives the instructor the option to allow students to submit their work online. The instructor can view it at their discretion and leave feedback for each student on their submission in this area. For more information, refer to Working with the Dropbox.
Email
The email feature provides an easy method to email course participants. You can automatically address email to course members or instructors directly from the Address Book. Email generated through Desire2Learn is delivered to the email address recorded within Desire2Learn. For more information, refer to Sending Email in Desire2Learn.
Grades
This feature is an immediate feedback option to let students know their progress in the course. In addition to grades, instructors can leave feedback on grade items and for an individual student's item. For more information, refer to Working with Grades.
News
The news is viewed in the Course Home page and contains any updates or information regarding the course. For more information, refer to Working with News.
Pager
This feature is similar to instant messaging; it allows users to communicate one on one in real time. For more information, refer to Working with the Pager.
Quizzes
This feature allows instructors to evaluate students online. Instructors can provide feedback on questions in general or on a question-by-question basis. For more information, refer to Creating a Quiz.
Schedule
The Schedule (calendar) provides a central location for course and personal events (e.g., add/drop periods, exams, personal appointments). For more information, refer to Using the Schedule.
Surveys
This feature allows instructors to assess their students as well as themselves in a survey format. This can include student's opinions, the familiarity of students with materials, or the level of familiarity with course software. For more information, refer to Creating Surveys.
