Setting Survey Restrictions

Survey restrictions can be used to set when the survey will be available, the number of times a student can complete the survey, and who will have access to the results. For more information on surveys in Desire2Learn, refer to Creating Surveys and Creating Survey Questions.

topSetting Survey Availability

When setting survey availability, you can choose to have the survey always available or you can set an availability period.

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click SURVEY
    The Manage Surveys pane appears.

  2. From the list of surveys, click the survey you want to modify
    The Edit Survey pane appears.

  3. Select the Restrictions tab

  4. To make the survey available, in the Availability section, from the Status pull-down menu, select Active

  5. To specify an availability date,

    1. In the Dates section, select Has Start Date
    2. Use the pull-down menus to select the survey’s start date and time
      HINT: To select the date from a calendar, click SELECT START DATE IN CALENDARSelect Start Date in Calendar button
    3. In the Dates section, select Has End Date
    4. Use the pull-down menus to select the survey’s end date and time
      HINT: To select the date from a calendar, click SELECT END DATE IN CALENDARSelect End Date in Calendar button
  6. Click SAVE SURVEY
    The availability is changed.

topSetting Additional Release Conditions

You can release surveys based on availability date, group membership, quiz grades, quiz completion, survey completion, and checklist completion.

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click SURVEY
    The Manage Surveys pane appears.

  2. From the list of surveys, click the survey you want to modify
    The Edit Survey pane appears.

  3. Select the Restrictions tab

  4. In the Additional Release Conditions section, click CREATE AND ATTACH
    The Create a New Release Condition dialog box appears.

  5. From the Condition Type pull-down menu, select the desired condition
    The dialog box is refreshed.

  6. From the new pull-down menu that appears, select the name of the group, quiz, survey, or checklist
    The dialog box is refreshed.
    NOTE: Some of the conditions require you to enter additional values (e.g., if you are releasing content based on a minimum or maximum quiz grade, in the Grade text box, type the desired grade as a percent).

  7. After completing all condition information, in the Create a New Release Condition dialog box, click CREATE

  8. In the Edit Survey pane, click SAVE SURVEY

topSetting User Response Options

Response options allow you to specify how many times a student may complete a survey.

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click SURVEY
    The Manage Surveys pane appears.

  2. From the list of surveys, click the survey you want to modify
    The Edit Survey pane appears.

  3. Select the Restrictions tab

  4. In the User Responses section, select the type of response you will allow:

Unlimited
Users may complete the survey multiple times during the availability period. All attempts are recorded.

Editable
Users may complete the survey only once, but may change their answers during the availability period.

Limited to
Users may complete the survey the specified number of times during the survey availability period. All attempts are recorded.

  1. Click SAVE SURVEY

topAdding Special Access

You can tailor restrictions for one or more students to accommodate special needs or situations.

Adding Special Access: Accommodating Selected Users

You can change the availability or length of time for a survey for selected students. For example, if a student has a learning disability, you can allot them more time to complete the survey than other students.

  1. From the My Home page, in the My Eau Claire Courses widget, select the desired course
    The Course Home page appears.

  2. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click SURVEY
    The Manage Surveys pane appears.

  3. Click the survey you want to restrict
    The Edit Survey pane appears.

  4. Select the Restrictions tab
    The Restrictions options appear.

  5. In the Advanced Availability section, select Allow selected users special access to this survey

  6. Click ADD USERS TO SPECIAL ACCESS
    The Special Access dialog box appears.

  7. To assign a special time for survey availability, in the Special Access Properties section, make the desired date and time selections

  8. In the User List section, select the user(s) to whom these special access criteria will apply
    NOTE: A user is selected if a checkmark appears next to their name.

  9. Click ADD SELECTED
    The dialog box closes and the selected students appear in the Advanced Availability section.

  10. To add different special access for other students, repeat steps 5-9

  11. Click SAVE SURVEY
    Special access for the selected user(s) is set.

Adding Special Access: Restricting Access to Selected Users

Using this feature you are able to restrict access to a survey to specific students. You could use this option in a situation where selected students will complete different surveys.

  1. From the My Home page, in the My Eau Claire Courses widget, select the desired course
    The Course Home page appears.

  2. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click SURVEY
    The Manage Surveys pane appears.

  3. Click the survey you want to restrict
    The Edit Survey pane appears.

  4. Select the Restrictions tab
    The Restrictions options appear.

  5. In the Advanced Availability section, select Allow only users with special access to see this survey.
    NOTE: When this option is selected, the survey is only available for those who are listed in the Advanced Availability section.

  6. Click ADD USERS TO SPECIAL ACCESS
    The Special Access dialog box appears.

  7. To assign a special time for survey availability, in the Special Access Properties section, make the desired date and time selections

  8. In the User List section, select the user(s) to which these special access criteria will apply
    NOTE: A user is selected if a checkmark appears next to his/her name.

  9. Click ADD SELECTED
    The dialog box closes and the selected students appear in the Advanced Availability section.

  10. To add different special access for other students, repeat steps 5-9

  11. Click SAVE SURVEY
    Special access for the selected user(s) is set.
