Intelligent Agents

The Intelligent Agents tool allows you to let your students (and you) know how they are doing in your class. For example, you can set up an intelligent agent that emails students who have not logged into your course for a certain period of time, or one that emails students with grades below a certain level.

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click EDIT COURSE
    The Course Administration page appears.

  2. In the Tools section, click INTELLIGENT AGENTS
    The Agent List pane appears.

  3. Click NEW AGENT
    The New Agent pane appears.

  4. In the Agent Name text box, type a name

  5. OPTIONAL: In the Description text box, type a description of the agent.

  6. To have the agent monitor login activity,

    1. Select Take action when the following login criteria are satisfied
      HINT: An option is selected when a checkmark appears before it.
    2. Select one of the Login Activity options
      HINT: An option is selected when the circle before it is dark.
    3. In the text box of the selected option, type the desired number of days

  7. To have the agent monitor something else,

    1. In the Release Conditions section, click CREATE AND ATTACH
      The Create a New Release Condition dialog box appears.
    2. From the Condition Type pull-down menu, select a condition type
      More options will appear in the Condition Details section.
    3. Make the desired Condition Details selections
    4. Click CREATE
      The dialog box closes; the newly created release condition appears in the Release Conditions section.

  8. Select an action repetition option

  9. To have the intelligent agent run automatically,

    1. Select Use Schedule
      NOTE: If you do not select this option, you will have to manually run the agent.
    2. Click UPDATE SCHEDULE
      The Update Agent Schedule dialog box appears.
    3. In the Repeats Every text box, type a number
      NOTE: To use a unit of time other than days, select one from the Repeats pull-down menu.
    4. In the Repeats Every text box, type a number
      NOTE: To use a unit of time other than days, select one from the Repeats pull-down menu.
    5. OPTIONAL: To have the agent start running after a certain date, select Has Start Date » choose a date
    6. OPTIONAL: To have the agent stop running after a certain date, select Has Stop Date » choose a date
      HINT: Choose a date at the end of the semester.
    7. Click UPDATE
      The dialog box closes; the Schedule section reflects your changes.

  10. Type the desired text for the email

  11. Click SAVE
    The Edit Agent pane appears.

Once you have created an intelligent agent, you can change how often it runs, the email, and its criteria.

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click EDIT COURSE
    The Course Administration page appears.

  2. In the Tools section, click INTELLIGENT AGENTS
    The Agent List pane appears.

  3. Click on the name of an agent
    The Edit Agent pane appears.

  4. Make any desired changes
    HINT: See Creating an Intelligent Agent for options.

  5. Click SAVE
    Your changes are saved.

After an agent has served its purpose, you may want to delete it.

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click EDIT COURSE
    The Course Administration page appears.

  2. In the Tools section, click INTELLIGENT AGENTS
    The Agent List pane appears.

  3. For the agent you wish to delete, click DELETEDelete button
    A confirmation dialog box appears.

  4. Click DELETE
    The agent list refreshes.

return to topManually Running an Intelligent Agent

Although you can schedule an intelligent agent to run automatically, you can also run intelligent agents manually.

  1. From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click EDIT COURSE
    The Course Administration page appears.

  2. In the Tools section, click INTELLIGENT AGENTS
    The Agent List pane appears.

  3. For the desired intelligent agent, click RUNRun button
    A confirmation dialog box appears.

  4. Click RUN
    The Manually Run Agent Confirmation pane appears.
    NOTE: When the agent has finished running, you will receive an email with the subject line Agent Completed.
