Instructional design is a way to design courses that help learners reach their goals. We recommend that you only use the Instructional Design Wizard if you are familiar with instructional design. The wizard offers a way to organize your course. For information on another tool that can be used to set up and organize courses, see Using the Course Builder.
The Instructional Design Wizard can be found under the Course Administration Tools.
Access the Course Home page
On the Navigation bar, click EDIT COURSE
In the Design section, click INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN WIZARD
The Instructional Design Wizard welcome page appears.
The first step in using the Instructional Design Wizard is defining learning goals. In this section, you set up modules and objectives.
Click START
The Instructional Design Wizard: List Modules pane appears.
In the Modules text box, type the names of your modules
HINT: List each module on a separate line.
Click NEXT
The List Course Competencies pane appears.
OPTIONAL: Add course competencies
NOTE: See Competencies Terminology for an introduction to competencies.
In the Name text box, type a name
Click CREATE COURSE COMPETENCY
Click NEXT
The List Learning Objectives pane appears.
In the Name or Description text box, type a learning objective statement
EXAMPLE: After this unit, the student will be able to explain biodiversity.
In the Course Competency pull-down menu, select a competency with which the objective will be linked
Click CREATE LEARNING OBJECTIVE
The learning objective will appear in the Independent Learning Objectives section.
Next to the desired learning objective, click CLASSIFY
The Classify Learning Objectives dialog box appears.
Select the appropriate classifications
Click CLASSIFY LEARNING OBJECTIVE
Click NEXT
The Define Module Objectives pane appears.
For the desired module, click ADD LEARNING OBJECTIVES
The Select Learning Objectives dialog box appears.
Select the desired learning objectives
Click ADD LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Click NEXT
The Design Assessments pane appears.
In the Choose Activities section of the Instructional Design Wizard, you can choose how your modules and learning objectives will be evaluated.
Access the Design Assessments pane
For the desired module, click ADD ASSESSMENT
The Add an activity dialog box appears.
Select from Direct Instruction, Indirect Instruction, and Independent Learning
Assessments appear in pane 3.
NOTE: Only assessments that match the classification of your learning objective (e.g., Understanding) and your approach (e.g., Direct Instruction) will appear.
Select any desired activities
Click ADD ACTIVITIES
The activity will appear in the Module Summary.
Choose a type of assessment
Diagnostic assessment
Determine students' knowledge before instruction.
Formative assessment
Measure students' progress during instruction.
Summative assessment
Measure students' performance after instruction.
From the Tool pull-down menu, select a tool
Click NEXT
The Design Content pane appears.
For the desired module, click ADD CONTENT The Add an activity dialog box appears
Select from Direct Instruction, Indirect Instruction, and Independent Learning
Activities appear in pane 3.
NOTE: Only activities that match the classification of your learning objective (e.g., Understanding) and your approach (e.g., Direct Instruction) will appear.
Select any desired activities
Click ADD ACTIVITIES
The activity will appear in the Module Summary.

Used to teach students.Learning supports
Used to help students.
From the Tool pull-down menu, select a tool
Click NEXT
The Choose Grading System pane appears.
In the Organize Grade Book section of the Instructional Design Wizard, you can establish a grading system. See Gradebook: Setup Wizard for more information.
Access the Choose Gradebook System pane
Make any desired changes to grading system
Click NEXT
The Categorize Grades pane appears.
Put your graded items in the desired category
NOTE: See Gradebook: Categories for more information.
Click NEXT
The Review Course Design pane appears.
Click NEXT The Finish pane appears.
Click CREATE COURSE BLUEPRINT
The Course Builder welcome page appears.
Click START
The Course Builder Canvas appears, with the module [Course Name] Blueprint.
