Discussions FAQs

When I click the compose button to post a new discussion message, nothing happens.
Check to see if your pop-up blocker in your browser is on. Add http://uwec.courses.wisconsin.edu to the websites that you allow to have pop-ups or change your settings to allow pop-ups. Visit the Google Support web site to learn more about pop-up blockers.
How can I alphabetize discussion messages by student last name?
Ask the students to start the subject line of their messages with their last name and then sort the messages by subject.
If you are unable to sort the messages,

In a discussion, click SETTINGS

Under Default Message List View, select Unthreaded View
You will now be able to sort by author, date, or subject.
NOTE: Sorting by author sorts the messages by the author's first name.
Can I grade students' discussion message directly in the Discussion tool?
Yes. Topics linked to a gradebook can be graded in the Discussion area.
To link a topic to the gradebook:

From the Course Home page, on the Navigation bar, click DISCUSSIONS
The Forums & Topics List pane appears. -
For the desired topic, in the Actions column, click EDIT TOPIC
The Edit Topic pane appears. -
Select the Assessment tab

From the Grade Item pull-down menu, select the item you wish to link to

In the Score Out of text box, specify the max number of points

Select Messages: Assess each message and automatically calculate the topic score

From the Calculation pull-down menu, select Average Message Score

Click SAVE
To grade the discussion:

Select a message
-
In the View Message pane, click ASSESS

In the Message Score text box, type the desired score

Click SAVE

Repeat steps 1-4 for the desired messages
Is there an easy way to view all the posts under one Discussion Topic?
The Print view lists all selected posts to a Discussion Topic in order by post. This view can be used for easy reading and/or printing.

From the Course Home page, click DISCUSSIONS
The Forums and Topics List pane appears. -
From the Forums and Topics List pane, click the topic you wish to view
The Discussion Topic pane appears with all messages posted within that topic shown. -
Select the post(s) that you want to view
OR
Select all posts -
On the Discussion toolbar, click VIEW SELECTED MESSAGES AS PRINTABLE
