Discussion Viewing Options

Desire2Learn provides numerous options to view and customize the way you view discussions and topic frames.

return to topDiscussion View: My Preferences Options

With Desire2Learn, you can change how you view discussions. You can also customize the topic frames and the types of posts that appear in your discussion.

  1. From the Course Home page, in the Welcome Box widget, click PREFERENCES
    The Preferences pane appears.

  2. Select the Discussions tab
    The Personal Settings pane appears.

  3. Select the desired options
    HINT: For information on any of the options, click GET HELPGet Help button

  4. When finished, click SAVE

return to topDiscussion View: Topic Bar Options

The following options are significant to discussion topic layout.

NOTE: Changing the layout of one discussion topic will change the layouts for all topics of that course.

  1. From the Course Home page, click DISCUSSIONS
    The Forums & Topics List pane appears.

  2. From the Forums & Topics List, click the topic you wish to view
    The Discussion Topic pane appears with all messages posted within that topic shown.

  3. On the Topic bar, click SETTINGSSettings button
    The Discussions Settings dialog box appears.

  4. Make your desired changes
    HINT: For information on any of the options click GET HELPGet Help button

  1. Click SAVE
    The changes are applied.

return to topDiscussion View: View Pull-Down Options

When viewing messages in the Discussion page, the View pull-down menu presents many options. These options are explained below.

  1. Click DISCUSSIONS
    The Forums & Topics List pane appears.

  2. Click the desired Topic

  3. From the View pull-down menu, select the desired options

Threaded
When messages are viewed as threaded, they appear in the order of their posting date. Replies to messages are indented under the message to which they are replying.

Unthreaded
When messages are viewed as unthreaded, replies are not indented, but appear flush with all other messages. They are sorted by date, regardless of whether the message is a reply or an original post.

All Messages
Displays all messages, read and unread.

Unread Only
Displays only messages that have not been read.

Flagged Only
Displays only messages that have been flagged for importance.

The buttons on the Discussion toolbar provide simple ways to find and organize messages in individual Discussion Topics.

  1. From the Course Home page, click DISCUSSIONS
    The Forums & Topics List pane appears.

  2. From the Forums & Topics List pane, click the topic you wish to view
    The Discussion Topics pane appears with all messages posted within that topic shown.

  3. Select additional options by clicking the appropriate buttons.

    Compose button Composes a new message within the topic
    Click to refresh button Refreshes the window
    Mark All Read button Marks all messages as having been read
    Show/Hide button Shows or hides the Search bar
    Settings button Lets you change discussion settings
    Mark Selected Messages as Read button Marks selected messages in the topic as read
    Mark Selected Messages as Unread button Marks selected messages in the topic as unread
    Delete selected messages button Faculty Only: Deletes selected messages
    View selected messages in a printable format button Allows you to view selected messages in a printable format
    Not Flagged - Click to Flag button Flags the associated message
