Customizing the Navigation Bars

The Navigation bars provide quick links to different areas of the online course material. You can edit the Navigation bars by activating or deactivating links, creating new links, modifying custom links, and changing the toolbar's format.

Customizing the Navigation bars begins with the Edit Navbar pane.

  1. From the My Home page, in the My Eau Claire Courses widget, select the desired course
    The Course Home page appears.

  2. From any page, on the top most Navigation bar, on the left side, click EDIT NAVBAREdit Navbar button
    OR
    For access from the Course Administration,

    1. On the Navigation bar, click EDIT COURSE
    2. In the General section, click NAVIGATIONNavigation button
      The Navbars pane appears.
  3. In the Name column, select the desired course navigation bar
    The Edit Navbar pane appears.

  4. Select the Links tab

If a link is active, it will appear on the Navigation bar; if it is inactive, it will not appear on the Navigation bar.

Activating Links

NOTE: It is recommended that the Bottom Left Link Area be used for the course tools.

  1. Access the Edit Navbar pane

  2. In the link area you want to edit, click ADD LINKSAdd Links button

  3. In the Links List, choose the link(s) you want to add to the link area
    NOTE: Only select links from one page of the Links List at a time; changing pages will unselect any links you have selected. To view all links as one page, select 50 in the Results Per Page pull-down menu.

  4. Click ADD
    The link will appear in Navbar Links under the link area.

  5. Click REFRESH to see your updated links in the Navigation bar

Deactivating Links

Links to My Home, Course Home and Content should remain active. These links allow for efficient navigation of D2L. If they are deactivated, students will be unable to access them. All other links are optional.
HINT: Remove links and tools not used in the course to avoid confusion.

  1. Access the Edit Navbar pane

  2. In the Links tab, to the right of the link you want to deactivate, click the arrowArrow button

  3. Select Remove from navbar Remove from navbar button
    A confirmation dialog box appears.

  4. Click YES
    The link will be gone from the link area in Navbar Links.

  5. To preview your changes,

    1. Click PREVIEW NAVBAR
      The Preview Navbar window appears.
    2. From the Screen Resolution pull-down menu, select your screen resolution
      HINT: Preview with 800x600 resolution to be sure that all links can be seen.
    3. When finished, close the Preview Navbar window

If you want to be able to access external links from the Navigation bar, you can add new links to it.

NOTE: It is recommended that the Bottom Left region be used for course tools and links.

  1. Access the Edit Navbar pane

  2. Select the Links tab

  3. To the right of the link area you want to edit, click the arrowArrow button

  4. Click ADD NEW CUSTOM LINK
    The New Custom Link dialog box appears.

  5. In the Name text box, type the link name
    NOTE: This text will appear on the Navigation bar.

  6. OPTIONAL: To use an image for the link, in the Icon section, select Custom

    1. Click ADD A FILE
    2. The Submit a File dialog box appears.
    3. Click BROWSE
      The Choose File to Upload dialog box appears.
    4. Navigate to and select the desired file
    5. Click OPEN
    6. Click UPLOAD
  7. In the URL text box, type the link URL
    OR
    To select a course file,

    1. Click INSERT A QUICKLINK
      The Insert a Quicklink dialog box appears.

    2. From the Category pull-down menu, select the desired category
    3. In the Link Details section, select the desired item
    4. Click INSERT

       

  8. In Window select Same Window with Navbar, Entire Window, or New Window
    NOTE: If you select New Window, you can specify the size of the window.

  9. To save your changes, click SAVE AND CLOSE
    The link is created.

After you have created links, you may wish to change them. Desire2Learn allows you to edit your links as well as change their order and location.

Modifying Links: Editing Links

You may modify the URL and target information only for existing custom links.

  1. Access the Edit Navbar pane

  2. To the right of the custom link to be edited, click the arrowArrow button

  3. Click EDIT CUSTOM LINK
    The Edit Custom Link dialog box appears.

  4. Make the desired changes

  5. To save your changes, click SAVE AND CLOSE
    The link is modified.

  6. To preview your changes,

    1. Click PREVIEW NAVBAR
      The Preview Navbar window appears.
    2. From the Screen Resolution pull-down menu, select your screen resolution
      HINT: Preview with 800x600 resolution to be sure that all links can be seen.
    3. When finished, close the Preview Navbar window

Modifying Links: Changing Link Order

  1. Access the Edit Navbar pane

  2. To the right of the link to be moved left or right, click the arrowArrow button

  3. To position the link in the desired location, click MOVE LEFTMove Left button or MOVE RIGHTMove Right button
    The link is moved.

  4. To preview your changes,

    1. Click PREVIEW NAVBAR
      The Preview Navbar window appears.
    2. From the Screen Resolution pull-down menu, select your screen resolution
      HINT: Preview with 800x600 resolution to be sure that all links can be seen.
    3. When finished, close the Preview Navbar window

Modifying Links: Changing Link Location

  1. Access the Edit Navbar pane

  2. To the right of the link to be moved, click the arrowArrow button

  3. Click MOVE LINK TO...Move Link To... button
    The Move Link To dialog box appears.

  4. Select the desired Link Area
    The link is moved.
