The Competencies tool in Desire2Learn is one way to evaluate student learning. This document covers using the Competency Wizard to set up competencies. For definitions of the terms used in the Competencies tool, see Competencies Terminology.
To use the Competencies tool, you must first add it to the navigation bar. Refer to Customizing the Navigation Bars for instructions.
Access the Course Home page
On the Navigation bar, click COMPETENCIES ![]()
The Competencies pane opens.
Click COMPETENCY WIZARD![]()
The Competency Wizard: New Competency pane appears.
In the Name text box, type the desired name
OPTIONAL: In the Description text box, type a description
Click NEXT
The Competency Wizard: New Learning Objectives pane appears.
In the Name text box, type the desired name
OPTIONAL: In the Description text box, type a description
In the Enforce evaluation method section, make the desired choice
HINT: For more information on an option, click HELP ![]()
Click NEXT
The Competency Wizard: New Activities pane appears.
In the Name text box, type the desired name
In the Evaluation Method pull-down menu, select the desired option

Click SELECT RUBRIC and pick a rubric for the activity
OR
Click CREATE RUBRIC IN NEW WINDOW
The New Rubric pane appears in a new window.
In the Name text box, type the desired name
OPTIONAL: In the Description text box, type a description
From the Type pull-down menu, select Analytic or Holistic
HINT: In an Analytic rubric, multiple criteria are scored and the scores added together. In a Holistic rubric, multiple criteria may be considered, but only the rubric as a whole is scored.

In the Initial # of Levels text box, type a number
NOTE: For information about levels, see Competencies Terminology.
In the Initial # of Criteria text box, type a number
NOTE: For information about criteria, see Competencies Terminology.
From the Scoring Method pull-down menu, select Points, Text Only, or Custom Points
HINT: In a Text Only scoring method, criteria are evaluated only through text (e.g., Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor). In a Points scoring method, students are given a numerical score on criteria. In a Custom Points scoring method, criteria do not have to be weighted equally.
Click SAVE
The Edit Rubric pane appears.
In the Status pull-down menu, select Published
Draft
Default status for a new rubric.
A rubric that is classified as a draft cannot be associated with an activity.
Published
A published rubric can be associated with an activity. After it has an association, its name, description, levels and criteria cannot be edited.
Archived
An archived rubric cannot be associated with an activity; any existing associations continue to function.
Make any other desired changes to the rubric
Click SAVE
The changes are saved.
Close the Edit Rubric window
The Competency Wizard: New Activities pane appears.
Click SELECT RUBRIC
The Select Rubric dialog box appears.
Select the desired rubric
Click SAVE
The Competency Wizard: New Activities pane appears.
Click NEXT
The Competency Wizard: Competency Structure pane appears.
Click CREATE
Click DONE
The Competencies pane appears.
