Roxio Compact Disc Creation

Creating a CD

The CD burner drives found on many computers on campus can be used to create CDs to archive information and share information with others. Computers equipped with a CD burner (recorder) have a type of drive called a CD-RW (Compact Disc, Rewritable) drive. To determine which General Access labs have CD burners, please see Lab Management's Lab Location Map & Detailed Lab Descriptions page.

It takes about 9 minutes to burn 100 megabytes (MB) of information to the CD. Since a blank CD can hold about 650 MB of information, it will take approximately one hour to burn the CD if you have 650 MB of files. By contrast, students' H: drives are limited to a maximum of 50 MB. This makes CDs an ideal media to use for backing up important documents or even an entire H: drive.

WARNING: The use of CD burners to make copies of music or software is illegal without permission from the copyright owner. Persons engaged in such activity could be prosecuted if caught. For more information, see the UW-Eau Claire Copyright Office's web site.

return to topConsiderations

All campus computers equipped with CD burners have a type of drive called CD-RW, for Compact Disc, Rewritable. These drives can burn data to both CD-R and CD-RW discs. Both discs will function the same way and can hold about the same amount of information. While CD-RW discs are more expensive, they do have a significant advantage in that they allow you to erase a disc with data on it and start over. CD-R discs cannot be erased.

NOTES:
Once you record a CD you cannot delete, rename, rearrange, or otherwise alter the files or file structure of the CD. The CD is a permanent copy of the files you recorded. If you are using a CD-RW disc, you may erase it and start over. Files recorded onto CD-Rs are permanent and cannot be erased.

The number of people logged on to a shared drive at any given time impacts the speed of data transmission. When burning a CD, data must record at a constant rate or the burn may fail. For that reason, you will achieve more reliable results if the file you are recording is located on your C: drive. We recommend that before you begin recording a CD, you copy the file you want to record from its current location (e.g., H: drive) to your C: drive. For more information on copying files, see File Management within Office 2000 Programs.

The CD burner drives have the ability to write to a CD in increments, which means you can start creating a CD in one sitting and add more data to it later.

For more information, see CD Creation FAQs.

The Easy CD Creator software program is split into two parts:

The top half of the program is the Explorer, which functions much like Windows Explorer. It allows you to navigate to the drive and folder that contain the files you wish to record onto the CD and also select these files.

The bottom half of the program is the CD Layout. The CD Layout allows you to quickly see all of the folders or individual files that will be recorded onto the CD. It also allows you to make changes to the folders or individual files you have selected to be recorded onto the CD (e.g., you may add to or remove from your selection or rename the files as they will appear on the disc).

  1. Open the Easy CD Creator
    The Easy CD Creator page appears with the Music CD selected by default.

  2. From the File menu, select New CD Project » Data CD or Music CD as appropriate
