Learning Opportunities

Lac du Flambeau Service Learning Project

For over 10 years, the Human Development Center has sponsored the Lac du Flambeau Service Learning Project at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. Undergraduate and graduate students participate in a multicultural learning experience at the Lac du Flambeau American Indian Reservation in northeast Wisconsin. UW-EC students learn about the Lac du Flambeau culture and educational and healthcare systems during a two-day orientation. Undergraduate students then return to Lac du Flambeau during the semester to assist in the local public school and with the area Head Start program. Graduate students provide more specialized services in the public school and area healthcare clinics throughout the semester. For more information on the Lac du Flambeau Service Learning Project please contact the HDC.

Tutor/Mentoring Programs

These programs are designed to benefit UW-Eau Claire students, as well as the students from the participating organizations. University students gain experience serving as tutor/mentors for children and adolescents from the community in our Academic Intervention Clinic. The HDC is currently sponsoring tutor/mentoring programs at Lakeshore, Longfellow, and Eau Claire Luthern schools in Eau Claire. Students are able to obtain service learning through the tutor/mentor program.

Research Opportunities

Faculty/Student Collaboration

Undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines have the opportunity to participate in interdisciplinary research projects. HDC faculty members in collaboration with students have completed research projects in the following areas of: academic and behavioral intervention, behavioral pediatrics (e.g. bedwetting, sleep problems), use of stimulant medication to treat ADHD and associated problems, use of curriculum based assessment in diagnosing learning disabilities, and program evaluation of multicultural service learning. The HDC is regularly awarded faculty-student collaborative research grants, as well as other research focused grants ( e.g., UW System Institute on Race and Ethnicity Research Credit). Students at the undergraduate and graduate levels often have opportunities to present research results at local and national conferences. Undergraduate or graduate students interested in pursuing interdisciplinary research focused on children, families, and schools should contact Dr. Michael. I. Axelrod at the HDC.
